Full field at Flamborough fight for exclusive FCG World Championship spots on Maple Leaf Junior Tour

 

A full field of elite young golfers participated in the non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Ontario Series at Flamborough Hills Golf Club in Copetown this past weekend, competing for titles in six divisions plus the chances to qualify for three major events: the FCG Callaway World Championship in Rancho Mirage, CA, the PGA Tour Canada-affiliated MJT Future Stars presented by ATB in Edmonton, AB, and the IMG Academy Junior World Championship in San Diego, CA. The MJT is the sole qualifier in Canada for the first two majors.

Carl Hanns-Arndt, 16, of Oakville, ON, shot a closing round of 69 to claim Low Overall and the MJT Juvenile Boys Division titles along with direct spots into the MJT Future Stars presented by ATB and the FCG World Championship.  In the Girls Divisions, Kaprice Park, 13, of Oakville, ON, continued her fine play, shooting a 3-under 70 on the second day to win Low Overall and the MJT Girls 15-19 Division titles. Park, along with each other division winner, was also awarded a MJT exclusive exemption into the FCG Callaway World Championship; the full list of qualifying spots is noted below, along with top results and winner quotes.

A dominant performance by MJT veteran Kaprice Park, 13, of Oakville, ON, resulted in her winning the Low Overall Girls score by two strokes, along with the MJT Girls U15 title.

Karolyn Zeng, 17, of Maple, ON, fired a final round 72 (-1) by making some key putts down the stretch to win the MJT Girls 15-19 Division title in style.  “It is really motivating (this win).  I can see that I have improved and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season,” said Zeng.

Among the MJT Peewee Boys, 11-year-old Dustin Zhao of Maple, ON, played steady in windy conditions to hold on and win his Division title.  “I feel really good,” said Zhao about his win, “I think my irons were good today and I didn’t lose any balls.”

Winning his second event of this young season, Brayden Card, 14, of Cambridge, ON, hovered around par for the weekend with great scores to win the MJT Bantam Boys Division title by six shots.  “It feels good to know that I am playing consistent and that my game is good enough to win every week,” said Card.  “It also feels good to know that the lessons that I have taken recently are paying off.”

Carl Hanns-Arndt, 16, of Oakville, ON, carded a 3-under 69 on the final day to leave the field behind and win Low Overall score with his MJT Juvenile Boys title.  When asked about his win, Hanns-Arndt said, “It feels great! It’s a good start to the season, I need to work on my driver but I’m ready to have an amazing season on the MJT.”

First round leader, Andrew Lee, 16, of Mississauga, ON, held on to win the MJT Junior Boys Division title in the tightest race of the weekend.  “I feel good about winning after a poor stretch golf.  I feel good to finally win again,” said Lee.  “I drove the ball great this weekend.  My iron play was also on point.”
