Boge best in MJT’s Bieber Classic Manitoba major where 5 champions crowned

 

The final event on the 2023 Manitoba circuit on Canada’s number one-played Junior Tour, the major-ranked MJT Bieber Classic - Manitoba Junior Championship, played out on Transcona Golf Club in Winnipeg, MB, this past week. Players were competing in the non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s three-day tournament on August 14 through 16 for titles in five divisions plus bonus MJT Order of Merit points, geared towards qualification into the season-ending MJT National Championship presented by TaylorMade and adidas Golf at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Arizona, this November.

Players were treated to some great weather as they battled it out for the last remaining spots in the MJT National Championship.  Top finisher scores and winner quotes are detailed below, while results from the TaylorMade Long Drive, PLYR Closest to the Pin, Booster Juice BounceBack Awards and Academy Points, are posted on the MJT website here.  Low Overall Honours for boys and girls respectively went to Juvenile Boys winner and MJT veteran, Brayden Boge from Winnipeg, MB, and India Young of Carman, MB, in MJT Girls 15-19.  Other highlights included Ryder St. Laurent of Île Des Chênes, MB, winning the MJT Peewee Boys division by four strokes, Hunter Oakden of Brandon, MB, posting all three rounds in the 70’s to win in MJT Bantam Boys, and Chase Janas of Oakbank, MB, holding off all challengers to win the MJT Junior Bys division in style.

The MJT Girls 15-19 Division title was won by 17-year-old India Young of Carman, MB, her second title of the year.  “The win is a relief,” said Young. “I am happy that my hard work over the past few weeks has paid off.”

Ryder St. Laurent, 12, of Île Des Chênes, MB, played solid golf for the week, earning the MJT Peewee Boys title for his third win of the year.  “It feels great to win,” said St. Laurent.  “I tried to focus coming down the stretch and hit one shot at a time.”

The MJT Bantam Boys Division title went to 12-year-old Hunter Oakden of Brandon, MB, who played solid golf all week, posting three rounds in the 70’s.  “It feels good to win for my second time this season,” said Oakden.  “I was four down after the first day and I knew everyone still had 36 holes to play.”

Low Overall honours and the MJT Juvenile Boys Division title went to MJT veteran, Brayden Boge, who posted back-to-back 71’s to build a huge lead going into the final round.  “This feels great, I had a lot of second place finishes and finally winning, especially a major, feels good” said Boge.

Chase Janas, 18, of Oakbank, MB, got out to a huge lead after two days, resulting in him winning the MJT Junior Boys Division title by twelve shots.  “It feels good to get a win,” said Janas.  “I was in the running last tournament and came second so it felt good, especially against some very talented golfers.”

About the MJT: The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is Canada’s number one-played Junior Golf Tour as well as the only national junior tour run exclusively by PGA of Canada Professionals and the ‘Road to College Golf’ in Canada. The organization is supported by valued Premier, Tournament and Product Partners. The MJT hosts 100 events across Canada, including free Ford Go Golf Junior Clinics, the MJT Mini Tour for 12U and multi-day events for competitive players aged 11-19 which also offer qualifiers for international tournaments.
