Canada’s major finale for golfers aged 12U crowns six MJT Mini Tour National Champions

Tsawwassen, BC – (August 26, 2022) – Canada’s number-one played Tour for young golfers, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, hosted the major finale in the country for golfers aged 6 to 12 in Tsawwassen, BC, on August 24 to 25 - the MJT Mini Tour National Championship at Tsawwassen Springs Golf Course. The event featured two days of competition with players qualifying from across Canada based on their performances in their regional MJT Mini Tour circuits. Playing in hot, dry weather both days, the young athletes competed for coveted National Championship titles in six divisions on the well-manicured Tsawwassen Springs Golf Course.

Great scoring among MJT Boys 11-12 was a highlight, where 12-year-old Tiger Xie, of Surrey, BC, won the division’s MJT Mini Tour National Championship title after firing sizzling scores of 73 and 69 (142) from the blue tees. Xie was a runner-up in 2021, so thrilled to break through in 2022 for the win. Tiger Zhao, 11, of Vancouver, BC, shot excellent rounds of 74 and 71 to finish second just three strokes back. Jeevyn Lotay, 12, of Burnaby, BC, who’s had a dominant presence on the BC circuit podium this season, finished third with rounds of 76 and 74.

The MJT Girls 11-12 Mini Tour National Championship title went to 11-year-old Kathleen Dunn, of Surrey, BC. Dunn capped off an impressive season by winning the finale with great scores of 78 and 74, holding off Karrisa Zhao, 12, of West Vancouver, BC, by one stroke. “It feels so good to be the Mini Tour National Champion,” commented Dunn. “The best part of the tournament was the up-and-down for the win on hole 18.” Serin Girard, 12, of Richmond, BC, finished in third place with scores of 75 and 81.

The MJT Boys 9-10 Mini Tour National Champion was 10-year-old Jayden H. X. Zhu, of Surrey, BC, who fired two outstanding rounds of 69 and 73 to win the title by two shots. Runner-up was 10-year-old Keaton Kreklewich, all the way from Melville, SK, who shot rock-solid rounds of 72 and 72. The third place finish went to the young Ziping Chen, 8, of Surrey, BC, who played up an age division (74-73).

Jenny Guo, 10, of West Vancouver, BC, played a dominant final round to take home the MJT Mini Tour Girls 9-10 National Championship title with scores of 81 and 70 (151). “I feel very happy about the win because I was down by three strokes the first day and then came back on round two, and had a nine-stroke lead,” commented Guo. “I made three birdies in a row too.” After an opening round of 81 to match Guo, 10-year-old Emma Kim, of Surrey, BC, carded a final round score of 79 (160) to finish in the runner-up position. Sedona Weitz, 9, of Calgary, AB, has had an incredible season thus far, traveling to the USA for multiple junior competitions with a dominant performance on the MJT Alberta Circuit. Continuing this streak, Weitz fired great rounds of 78 and 84 to claim third place on the national podium.

Seven-year-old Everett Quewezance was crowned MJT Boys 8U Mini Tour National Champion. The Kamloops, BC, golfer shot steady scores of 78 and 77 (155), which included six birdies and gave him a nine-stroke lead. “I am so excited to be a national champ,” commented Quewezance, who dedicated his performance to his grandfather. “Getting this opportunity to play against great players was the highlight. I just took a deep breath whenever it got stressful and went to my dad caddie to get a big hug. My favourite memory of the season was today, right here though, winning the Mini Tour Nationals, and making new friends.” Tianyang (Sky) Zhou, 8, of Surrey, BC, pulled off two great rounds of 83 and 81 to take the runner up place on the podium.  In third place, Carter Lavers, 8, of North Vancouver, BC, finished with rounds of 85 and 80, just one stroke back of second place.

The MJT Girls 8U division crowned April Zhang, 8, of Surrey, BC, as the National Champion (83- 74=157). Zhang carried forward her enthusiastic energy seen at Mini Tour events throughout the season into the Championship, and was a top contender in the division from the start.  Runner-up was the highly competitive Luna Zhou, 7, of Vancouver, BC, who fired rounds of 78 and 83 to finish four strokes behind Zhang. Victoria Shen, 8, of Surrey, BC, placed third with rounds of 88 and 86.

The MJT Booster Juice Bounceback Awards for best improvement in score in round two from round one went to April Zhang (Surrey, BC), Jenny Guo (West Vancouver, BC), Ivy Yao (Surrey, BC), Ethan Sitarz (Winnipeg, MB), Kingston Ji (Coquitlam, BC), and Yujun (Tiger) Du (Delta, BC).
