Dai, Leonard make comebacks, Xu and Ursu win playoffs in MJT G&G Prodigy Series at Mill Run

Uxbridge, ON – (July 31, 2021) –  Players on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour battled through rainy weather and windy conditions on the first day but fortunately enjoyed sun and better conditions on day two of the MJT G&G Prodigy Series at Mill Run Golf Course, in Uxbridge, ON, July 29 and 30. Participants were competing for six division titles as well as for valuable points on the MJT Order of Merit presented by RBC, which qualifies players for the MJT National Championship presented by TaylorMade and adidas Golf in British Columbia this October.

The MJT Junior Boys Division saw a come-from-behind victory from 17-year-old Nathan Leonard, of Courtice, ON. Leonard fired rounds of 73 and 76 (149), making his way back from a three-shot deficit to win the title by two shots. “I wasn’t sure how I felt going into the tournament as it was my first ever MJT,” commented Leonard. “After I got the win, I felt very proud of all the hard work I’ve done throughout the summer.” Toronto, ON’s Paul Quilty, 18, shot 70 and 81 (151) to finish in the runner-up position.

There was a tie at the top of the leaderboard with a total score of 153 after 36 holes of play in the MJT Juvenile Boys Division, between Markham, ON, golfer David Ursu, 15, (76-77) and Kleinburg, ON, golfer James Mcnair, 15, (74-79). Emerging victorious from the playoff and earning his first-ever MJT title was Ursu. “I felt pretty good coming into this tournament as I won my last one,” Ursu said afterwards. “I’m even happier now that I won this event on the MJT.”

Another division that required extra holes to determine a winner was MJT Girls U15, where Richmond Hill, ON, golfer Sophia C. Xu (77-81) and Markham, ON, golfer Michelle Chu  (79-79), both aged 12, finished tied with a score of 158. Picking up her second consecutive title after winning the playoff was Xu, who has consistently remained at the top of the MJT leaderboards. Rounding out the podium in third place was 13-year-old Angela Cai, of Oakville, ON, with scores of 80 and 79 (159).

Ashley Noh won the MJT Girls 15-19 title with scores of 78 and 80 (158). The 16-year-old golfer from Richmond Hill, ON, earned her first ever MJT Junior Tour win with her performance at Mill Run Golf Course. Runner-up in the division was Zhana Navato, 15, of Toronto, ON    (83, 87=170).

Mississauga, ON, resident Barron Mundy has seen his name around the top of the MJT leaderboards over recent events and earned himself the MJT Bantam Boys title at Mill Run with scores of 74 and 78 (152). The 13-year-old golfer saw himself tied for the lead after the first day and held on to the top spot for majority of the second round. “I think that all parts of my game were pretty good,” commented Mundy. “The wind was challenging and I’m happy to get the win.” Maxim McKenzie, 13, of Chilliwack, BC, finished in the runner-up position after recording scores of 76 and 82 (158).

Winning his fourth MJT Peewee Boys title this season was 11-year-old Andy Dai. The Markham, ON, golfer carded 73 and 74 (147), coming back from a three-shot deficit after the first day to win the division. “I’m happy I did well playing in the wind, but my putting was most responsible for the win,” said Dai. “I felt proud of myself for winning while overcoming the challenges of the rain and wind.” Runner-up was Richmond Hill, ON, player Max Li, 11, with scores of 70 and 79 (149).

Full results can be viewed here. The MJT next heads to Windsor for the MJT Ontario Series at Ambassador Golf Club on August 7 and 8, right after the Ambassador course hosts the 2021 Canadian Men’s Amateur. More details of the MJT event can be found at www.maplejt.com.
