Cambridge, ON – (July 27, 2020) – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour was back in action in Cambridge, ON, hosting a major event on the July 25 and 26 weekend with some of the top junior golf talent from all across Ontario competing in the MJT Summer Classic presented by Freedom 55 Financial at Galt Country Club.
The Freedom 55 Financial Low Overall Boys score went to MJT veteran-player Andreas Diogenous. The 15-year old golfer from Cambridge is no stranger to the top of the leaderboard and while playing up a division, carded two impressive rounds of 71 (142) on the immaculate Galt course to win the MJT Junior Boys title in convincing fashion. “My short game was pretty solid both days, but I also putted really well on the second day,” commented Diogenous, who attributed his win to his play around the greens. “It feels great to win because I moved up a division.”
The Freedom 55 Financial Low Overall Girls score was taken by 15-year old Nicole Gal in the MJT Girls 15-19 Division. The Oakville, ON, native fired 73 and 71 (144) to win her title by eight shots. “I was pretty consistent both days,” commented Gal, whose consistency showed on her scorecard. “I made some key up and downs and I’m proud of myself for how I played both days.”
14-year old Tara O’Connor found herself back in the winner’s circle in the MJT Girls U15 Division over the weekend. The Guelph, ON, rising star had a share of the lead after an opening round 77 but surged ahead on day two carding a 75 (152) and capturing the title by six shots. “I managed the course well,” she said, crediting both her physical and mental approaches. “I did a good job of staying calm after I hit a poor shot.”
Two champions were crowned in the MJT Bantam Boys Division at Galt Country Club. Toronto, ON, players Matthew Javier, 13, and Ben De Castro, 14, both finished the event with total scores of 155. De Castro carded scores of 78 and 77 using his consistency to keep him up top while Javier fired rounds of 83 and 72 surging back on the second day to force the playoff. Still tied after four extra playoff holes, there was not enough light to continue further and both players shared the division title.
The MJT Juvenile Boys Division also witnessed another tie at the top of the leaderboard between 16-year old Christopher Sobil, of Courtice, ON, and 16-year old Aiden Shah, of Waterloo, ON. Shah fired 78 and 77 (155) while Sobil carded scores of 81 and 74 (155) to come back from a three-shot deficit after the first day to share the win.
An exciting finish took place in the MJT Peewee Boys Division that saw 12-year old Barron Mundy win by a single shot. The Mississauga, ON, player sat in fourth place after the first day opening with a round of 85. Mundy’s move came in the final two hours of the event as he made four birdies in his last eight holes to propel himself above the reset of the division and capture the title. “It feels very good to win,” commented Mundy, who was ecstatic over his comeback. “I really liked the MJT event.”
