MJT Mini Tour goes to playoff at Orangeville Golf Club

Orangeville, ON – (August 21, 2017) – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Mini Tour for players aged 12 and under held a recent tournament at Orangeville Golf Course in Orangeville, ON, August 19, where players competed for trophies and prizes in Girls Atom, Girls Peewee, Boys Atom and Boys Peewee divisions.

A sudden death playoff was needed to determine the winner in the Peewee Boys Division after a tie with a score of 84 between Jax Sisson, 11, of LaSalle, ON, and Nima Ashkar, 12, of Guelph, ON. Sisson chipped in for birdie on the second hole to take home the title. “The highlight is for me was learning that I tied for first and was in a playoff,” he said.

In the Atom Boys Division, Joshua Lee, 9, of Mississauga, ON, shot 90 to win by six strokes over Evan Wee, 10, of Richmond Hill, ON. Lee said the key to victory was ‘lots of hard work’ and the his highlight was his putting.

The Peewee Girls Division winner was Alissa Xu, 11, of Richmond Hill, ON, who shot a round of 76 and won by four strokes over Ella Weber, 12, of Burlington, ON. Xu said he win was due to ‘many years of practice.’

In the Atom Girls Division, Sarah Yang, 10, of Oakville, ON, prevailed over Sophia Xu, 8, of Richmond Hill, ON. Yang shot 85 to win by five strokes. “My irons and driver both went very far and my irons were very accurate,” Yang said. “I’m very happy but I hope to improve and hit a better score next time here.”

The Maple Leaf Junior Tour encourages respect for the game and awards winners who exemplify these standards. This week the award winners were Ella Weber, Andre Zhang, Ava Crane, Azeem Manzoor, Mariana Vivas, and Nima Ashkar. In addition, Closest to the Pin and Long Drive competition prizes were also awarded and the winners are posted online.

The final MJT Mini Tour event in 2017 is the MJT Mini Tour National Championship presented by Ford at Tsawwassen Springs Golf Club in Tsawwassen, BC, August 24-25. For more information please visit www.maplejt.com.
