Anderson, Zhai, Xu and Sang take MJT Mini Tour titles at Burnaby Mountain

Burnaby, BC - July 18, 2017 –  Burnaby Mountain Golf Course, in Burnaby, BC, played host to the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Mini Tour Summer Series on Monday, July 17, where players aged 12 and under competed for Boys and Girls division titles in Atom (10 years and under) and Peewee (11 to 12 years).

Bonnie Zhai, 12, of Surrey, BC, shot 80 from the Peewee Girls tees and won her division for the second week in a row on the MJT Mini Tour, beating Meera Minhas, 12, of Burnaby, by eight strokes for the title. “I think the best thing about my game today was my drives, not because they were long but because they were straight,” Zhai said. “I feel that the MJT organization helps young golfers such as myself learn to play under pressure.”

In the MJT Atom Girls division, Kaitlyn Anderson, 10, of Maple Ridge, BC, shot 77, and was able to beat June Hsiao, 10, of Coquitlam, BC by two strokes for the title.

The MJT Atom Boys division witnessed a close race with some excellent scores posted and four players breaking 80. In the end it was Jay Xu, 10, of Burnaby, who shot a 73 for a three stroke victory over Maxim McKenzie, 9, of Chilliwack, BC. Xu said, “I messed up my back 9 a little, but still held on, so happy for that.”

Jason Sang, 12, of Surrey, BC, shot a 77 from the Peewee Boys tees and defeated Noah Karlgren, 12, also of Surrey, by five strokes to take home the division title. Sang said, “I am happy to be in first place. The course conditions were very good, I like it.”

Closest to the Pin and Long Drive prizes were also awarded and results can be viewed online.

The MJT Mini Tour Series culminates with the MJT Mini Tour National Championship presented by Ford at Tsawwassen Springs Golf in Tsawwassen, BC, on August 24 and 25. This is an invitation-only event; players qualify via performance on the MJT or can apply for a special exemption by emailing jrtour@maplejt.com.
