Harvey wins Collegiate and Low Overall title on MJT at National Pines

Barrie, ON. – (July 31, 2017) – Tyler Harvey, 19, of Unionville, ON, fired a two-round total of 145 to take home Low Overall and the Collegiate division title in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) latest stop at National Pines Golf Club in Barrie, ON, on July 29 and 30, where players were competing in seven divisions as well as for direct exemptions into MJT Boston Pizza National Championship presented by TaylorMade-adidas at Reunion Resort in Orlando, FLA, this coming November.

Full results and overall event highlights are posted on the MJT website HERE, showing winners of the Miura ‘Respect the Game’ Award, PLYR Long Drive, PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin and Golf Town Performance Awards.

Harvey, who shot scores of 70,75 (145) to win his division by 12 strokes over Blake Mackey, 19, of Walkerton, ON, commented, “It was great to play consistent golf for two days and win. I was hoping to play in a lot of tournaments this season to gain experience for my next season of College golf.”

Thomas Horan, 17, all the way from Victoria, BC, made his appearance in the tournament worth his while by winning the MJT Junior Boys 17-18 division title over Michael Desautels, 17, of Oakville, ON. Horan, who shot 80,80 (160), said of his win, “I played smart golf and didn’t take very many risks off the tee. The course was fantastic with fast greens and I’m very pleased with the results this weekend – I’ve heard many positive things about the tour and happened to be in Ontario for this event.”

The MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 division title went once again to Isiah Katsube, 15, of Elmira, ON, who followed up his MJT victory at Lionhead Golf Club in mid-July by carding a narrow two stroke win over Ranen Oomen-Danckert, 16, of Mono, ON, this past weekend. Katsube said, “I hit the ball awful, but my short game was great - my putting and chipping were keys to the win.”

Ethan Irvine, 13, of Ancaster, ON, posted an impressive two-day total of 152 (73,79) to win the MJT Bantam Boys 13-14 division over runner-up Nicholas Lin, 14, of Toronto, ON. Irvine said, “I feel very happy and excited to have played two solid rounds. I am also very proud to have shot my best round the first day.”

Outstanding scoring off the MJT Peewee Boys tees secured a fine victory for Kevin Lee, 12, of Markham, ON. Lee shot scores of 70, 74 (146), to run away with the title.

The MJT U15 Girls division saw Madelin Boyd, 13, of Oshawa, ON shoot 79,79 (158) to win by nine strokes over Annie Yu, 13, of Richmond Hill, ON. Boyd said of her win, “I feel very proud and very happy with where my game is at. The best thing about my game today were my irons as I gave myself a lot of birdie chances.”

And last but not least, the MJT Girls 15-18 winner was veteran Haley Katona, 15, of Tilbury, ON, who shot a two-day total of 159 (81,78) to win her first MJT title this season by 10 strokes over Shehna Akbary, 15, of Barrie. “Winning my division feels good because it is my first win of the year,” said Katona. “I hit 16 out of 18 greens and most of the fairways.”

Katsube, Irvine, Lee, Boyd and Katona all qualify for direct exemptions into the MJT National Championship with their victories. The next tournament on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour in Ontario this season is at Copetown Woods Golf Club in Copetown on August 12 and 13.
