Three qualify for ITC at MJT’s London event presented by Freedom 55 Financial

London, ON. (July 3, 2017) – Three players on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour qualified for spots on MJT Team Ontario to the upcoming International Team Challenge (ITC) presented by Freedom 55 Financial as a result of their play in the MJT’s PGA of Ontario Junior Championship, also presented by Freedom 55 Financial, at Forest City National Golf Club in London over the Canada Day weekend.

Players were competing on Canada’s number-one played Junior Golf Tour for titles in seven divisions, as well as the chance to qualify for the third annual International Team Challenge which runs September 22 through 24 at Royal Niagara Golf Club, in Niagara Falls, ON. The team spots went to Shannon Coffey of Windsor, ON, Aidan Smith of Dorchester, ON, and Davey Morton of Woodstock, ON.

Davey Morton, 17, shot rounds of 75-72 (147) to defeat Myles Thiessen, 17 of Kingsville, ON, by five strokes and win the MJT Ontario PGA Junior Boys 17-18 Championship. “It feels good to put two rounds together for once,” Morton said. “I hit a lot of fairways.”

Aidan Smith, 16, shot a two-day total of 150 (79,71) to defeat Cameron Corbett, 15, of Little Britain, ON, for the MJT Ontario PGA Juvenile Boys 15-16 trophy, saying the key to his game were, “tee shots and my ability to move on and forget about the last hole, or even the last shot, and these are important assets here at Forest City National.”

Joining Morton and Smith on MJT Team Ontario for the ITC is Shannon Coffey, 16, who was crowned MJT Ontario PGA Junior Girls 15-18 champion after shooting rounds of 81-76 (157). “I feel fantastic about winning my division title,” she said. “My putting was the best thing about my game.”

Ethan Irvine, 12, of Ancaster, ON, narrowly won the MJT Ontario PGA Bantam Boys 13-14 title by a single shot over Tyler Richardson, 14, of Camlachie, ON. Irvine, who also won last weekend on the MJT at Galt Country Club in Cambridge, said, “I feel very happy and excited for not only coming back from four shots back to win, but winning two tournaments in a row. I think my focus today and keeping my emotions controlled for the most part was key. Also, my irons were more consistent than yesterday.”

In MJT U15 Girls, Bo Brown, 13, of Mississauga, ON, shot rounds of 89-85 (174) to defeat 10-year-old Elika Ekmali, of Markham, ON, for the win. “It was very exciting because it’s my first win,” Brown said. “I thought the course was in great condition, it was a good course to play because it made me step up my game.”

MJT Peewee Boys 11-12 winner was Andre Zhu, 10, of Richmond Hill, ON who shot 74-71 (145) from the shorter tees (silver), and in the new MJT Collegiate Men’s 19-23, it was Kyle Meaney, 19, of London, ON shot 82-85 (167) from the back tees (black) to win.

In addition to the above division champions, full results and overall event highlights are posted on the MJT website HERE, showing winners of the Miura ‘Respect the Game’ Award, PLYR Long Drive, PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin and Golf Town Performance Awards.
