Manitoba Junior Golf Season Tees off in Carman with MJT

Carman, MB (May 8, 2017) –  Junior golfers in Manitoba teed off their season this past weekend at Carman Golf Club in Carman, where the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour held a two-day tournament for competitive players in eight age divisions, also featuring a qualifier for age-specific spots into the IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships at Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego, California, this July.

Full results and a photo gallery can be viewed online, and winners of each age division are highlighted below.

MJT Peewee Boys: Spence Mott, 10, of Brandon, MB, shot 78,94 = 172 to win the MJT Peewee Boys Hoselton Trophy by 10 shots over Grady Chuback, 11, of Headingley, MB. Mott said he felt ‘good about the win,’ and credited his long game for the title.

MJT Bantam Boys: Braxton Kuntz, 13, of Winnipeg, MB, shot 76,77 = 153 and was able to defeat Noah Fiks 13, also of Winnipeg, by four shots over the weekend. “I played well on the front nine and got an eagle by sinking one from 80 yards,” said Kuntz, adding that he thought the course was in good shape as well.

MJT Juvenile Boys: Eric Strick, 15, of Winnipeg, shot 75,79 = 154 to hang on to the title with a three-stroke victory over Jacob Armstrong, 15, of Winnipeg. “I played very well in Arizona (at the MJT Nationals last year), and worked super hard with my coach over the winter to get to where I am. My chipping got it close on lots of shots and I feel very good (about winning).”

MJT Junior Boys: The MJT Junior Boys Hoselton Trophy went to Cameron McIntyre, 18 of Winnipeg, who played consistently over the weekend with rounds of 74,75 = 149. McIntyre said, “The best thing about my game today had to be my putting and I feel pretty good.”

MJT Collegiate Men: This new division for players age 19-23 on the MJT was won by MJT veteran Izac Silagy, 19, of Winnipeg, with rounds of 72,77=149, securing a six-stroke victory over Aaron McIntyre, 20, of Winnipeg. Silagy said, “It was fun and relaxing out there, so that adds to the enjoyment of winning. I’ve played MJT since I was 13, they are fun and more relaxed tournaments. The course was in nice shape for how early the season is – it was tough to notice that some holes had been flooded earlier on this spring.”

MJT Girls U15: Ella Kozak, 11, of Yorkton, SK, shot rounds of 105,105 = 210 to take hole the U15 girls title. Ella said, “she was very proud of herself, and the best part of her game were her fairways shots”

MJT Girls 15-18: The title went to Rebecca Kuik, 18 of Winnipeg, posting rounds of 84,85=169. Rebecca, said, “it feels good, because she knew she played well, and she plays the MJT because it is great to play in her home province against good competition.”

MJT Collegiate Women: Marissa Naylor, 19, of Winnipeg, came out to launch this new division in the province and shot solid rounds of 80,79 (159), crediting her putting as it ‘saved her both days.’ “This division is great experience for future collegiate tournaments as I will be playing with the U of M Bisons in September,” she added.
