Over 100 juniors participate in Ford Series, Mini Tour and Clinic at Hazelmere

Vancouver, BC. (June 12, 2017) – Over 100 juniors participated in a trifecta of Ford-sponsored events on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour at Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club in Surrey, BC, over the June 10 and 11 weekend - a MJT Ford Series tournament, a MJT Mini Tour stop, and a free MJT Ford Go Golf! This full weekend of junior golf saw newcomers to the game receiving instruction on putting, chipping and full swing in the clinic, young players aged 10 and under competing in the MJT Mini Tour, and competitive juniors playing in the two-day MJT Ford Series tournament for division titles as well as short listed qualifying spots on MJT Team Canada to Australia this fall.

A photo gallery of the clinic is posted at Free Ford Junior Clinics and results of the Mini Tour are posted HERE, showing the Girl’s Division winner as Martini Yu, 11, of Coquitlam, BC (82), and Boy’s Division winner as Jay Xu, 10, of Burnaby (75). Four players also qualified for spots into the US Kids British Championship: Yu, Xu, Sky Sun from Delta and Yul Koh from Surrey.

Below are individual mentions of the division winners from the MJT Ford Series tournament, which also featured a hole-in-one contest to win a new Ford Focus; several players came close and overall event highlights are posted on the MJT website HERE showing winners of the Miura ‘Respect the Game’ Award, PLYR Long Drive, PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin and Golf Town Performance Awards, as well as those who qualified for shortlisted age-specific spots on MJT Team Canada to the Jack Newton International Junior Classic in Australia, October 2 to 6 (Victoria Liu for the Girls, and Lucas Oh for the Boys).

MJT Girls 15-18: Victoria Liu, 14, of Vancouver, BC shot 78,76=154 to win by three strokes over Rebecca Jiang, 16, of Langley, BC. “It feels good, I enjoyed playing with my friends,” said Liu, who went on to say, “the course was in good condition and dry, I enjoy playing here.”

MJT Girls U15: Lauren Kim, 11, of Surrey, BC, shot 77,77=154 to win by six strokes over Coco Pei, 12, of Surrey, BC, and said, “I feel very happy about winning my second Hoselton trophy. Key for me was my long game and chipping.”

MJT Peewee Boys 11-12: Ryan Vest, 10, of Vernon, BC shot 79,82=161 to beat Ryan Burns, 11, of Abbotsford, BC, by four strokes. Vest said, “I am really happy to get the win this weekend, my game was not as sharp as it has been recently but I was able to hang on and get the win.”

MJT Bantam Boys 13-14: Bailey Bjornson, 13, of Surrey, BC shot 77,81 = 158 to mark his fourth win of the season on the MJT with a five stroke margin over Aaron Lim, 14, of Surrey, BC.

MJT Junior Boys 17-18: Lucas Oh, 17, of Surrey, BC, shot 82,83 to defeat Jordan Loyst, 17, of Pitt Meadows, BC, for the title, and said, “I feel good as well as a bit embarrassed because I did not play as well as I should. I have a lot of fun playing in MJT, lots of prizes, pizza, and the staff are great!”

The next two MJT stops in the province are the MJT Ford Series at Predator Ridge Golf Resort in Vernon on July 24 and 25, followed by the three-day MJT Odlum Brown Classic-PGA of BC Junior Championship at Northview Golf Club in Surrey on August 8 to 10. There are also two more MJT Mini Tour stops in BC this summer - one at Musqueam Golf Club in Vancouver on July 10, followed by one at Burnaby Mountain Golf Course in Burnaby on July 17.
