Pitt Meadows, BC. (May 29, 2017) – Over 110 kids participated in the MJT Ford Series and West Coast Ford Lincoln Go Golf! Junior Clinic on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour at Swan-e-Set Bay Resort in Pitt Meadows, BC, this past weekend, where the elite players were competing for titles in seven age divisions on Canada’s number-one played Junior Golf Tour as well as for short-listed spots to the Nordic Junior Team Matches in Finland, this fall.

The West Coast Ford Lincoln Go Golf! Junior Clinic was to introduce kids to the game for free, and community kids came out to enjoy instruction by the professionals in three skills areas: putting, chipping and full swing. For more information on the Ford Go Golf! Junior Clinics please see here: Free Ford Junior Clinics.

The MJT Ford Series tournament ran May 27 and 28 and featured a hole-in-one contest to win a new Ford Focus; several players came close and overall event highlights are posted on the MJT website HERE, showing winners of the Miura ‘Respect the Game’ Award, PLYR Long Drive, PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin and Golf Town Performance Awards.

Regarding the six division champions, low overall and the MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 title was won by Miguel Cullum, 15, of Coquitlam, BC, after he shot 78,77=155 to win by three strokes over Peter Zhang, 16, of Surrey, BC. “It feels pretty good, and it also motivates me to get better,” he said, “My positive attitude when things went wrong helped me.’ Both Cullum and Zhang are now shortlisted for the Nordic Junior Team Matches in Finland.

MJT veteran, Evan Merrier, 18, of Surrey, BC, won the MJT Junior Boys 17-18 Hoselton trophy after he shot 81, 85 = 166 to edge fellow Surrey resident, Lucas Oh, by one. “It is a great feeling to win. I am very happy with myself for persevering through adversity today,” said Merrier. “The best part about my game today was making some important putts including a 50-footer to save par on hole 12.”

The new MJT Collegiate Men 19-23 division was won by Tyler LeClair, 20, of North Vancouver, BC (80,79 = 159), after he held off Sikander Kaleka of Spruce Grove, AB, by one shot. It was serendipity as LeClair said, “It feels good to win, especially here where I lost by a shot on the last hole during this tournament last year.”

In Bantam Boys 13-14, the MJT champion by an amazing 12 strokes was Andy Luo, 14, of Burnaby, BC (70,72=142). “It felt so great, because this is the first time shooting two-under par in MJT, plus winning by 12 strokes,” said Luo. “My putting was very good, I made the putts I needed to make, however my irons and driver were also really consistent.” He added, “The MJT staff are very nice, and the rules officials are very respectful and know the rules very well.”

Justin Bjornson, 11, of Surrey, BC, claimed his fourth MJT Peewee Boys 12 and under title, saying, “I feel great, and happy my hard work is paying off,” after he held off Ryan Vest, 10, of Vernon, BC (74-79=153).

The MJT Girls 15-18 division winner was 18 year-old Esther Subin Lee of Maple Ridge, BC, who fired great rounds of 76, 72 = 148 to win by 11 strokes. Lee said, “It feels really good, because I have been working really hard on my game. The course was in really good shape.”

Angela Arora, 12, of Surrey, BC, shot solid scores of 80, 79 = 159 to win her second MJT Girls U15 title this season, stating, “I feel very proud because the competition was tough and after the first day three girls were tied. Also, my attitude was really good. I didn’t get angry much.”
