Cousineau Low Overall at MJT Ford Series at The Dunes Kozlowski, Overennay and Thornley qualify for the IPC

Kamloops, BC – (July 3, 2016) – Canada’s number one-played junior golf tour returned to Kamloops, BC, for the first time in many years this past week, hosting the Dearborn Ford/Kamloops Free Ford Go Golf! Junior Clinic for kids in the community on June 29 and the two-day Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Ford Series for competitive golfers on June 30 and July 1, both at the well-conditioned The Dunes at Kamloops Golf Club. Very hot weather on day one and some rain on day two did not deter excellent scoring in the tournament, which was also a qualifier for members into the International Players Championship (IPC) presented by Miura Golf in Jasper, Alberta, this August.

Almost eight years after participating as a beginner in the very same Dearborn Ford free junior clinic, Terry Cousineau , 18, of Kamloops, made it a perfect circle and won the MJT Junior Boys Division title and low overall in the MJT Ford Series with stellar rounds of 70, 70 (140), featuring a par-three play on the second day, making three birdies out of the four par threes and then lipping out for a birdie on the fourth. “I feel good about winning, this is my biggest win up until this point,” he said.  Hot on his heels was runner-up Jackson Thornley, 18, of Vancouver, BC, who had a birdie-eagle-birdie stretch on the first day and a three-under par 69 on day two (73, 69=142). Tyler Leclair, 19, of North Vancouver, BC, had an amazing five-under par on day two to vault into third place (76, 67=143).

Ely Overennay, 16 of Castlegar, BC, triumphed as the Juvenile Boys Champion in his first MJT outing after firing rock solid rounds of 71, 71 (142) for a six-stroke winning margin over Coldstream, BC’s, Brandon Chai, 15 (77, 71=148). “I worked hard out there and made some putts,” said Overennay, who the MJT event was ‘really well put together.’ There was a tie for third spot in the division between Taylor Bourdon, 16, of Delta, BC (80, 75=155) and George Wilkins, 15, of Lake Country, BC (78, 77=155).

Enjoying his home course advantage was MJT Bantam Boys Division winner Adam Niles, 14, of Kamloops, who shot rock-solid consistent rounds of 75, 75 (150). Niles felt that his win was due to all his practicing and ‘all my competitors pushing me.’ Runner-up was Cooper Lindberg, 13, who travelled from Calgary, AB, to participate (81, 82=163), and there was a three-way tie for third place between Nicholas Jenner, 14, of Castlegar, BC (85, 79=164), Hunter Penalva, 14, of Vernon, BC (82, 82=164), and Kyle Mayner, 13, of Kelowna, BC, (81, 83=164).

Taking top spot in the MJT Peewee Boys Division was 9 year-old phenomenon Ryan Vest, of Vernon, BC, (75, 77=152), who admitted he felt a bit worried about his competitors during the tournament and was happy with the win. “I’ve played on the MJT for two years and I like the tour,” he added.  Arlen DesChamp, 12, of Prince Rupert, BC, was the runner-up shooting 80, 83 (163), and Junwoo Nam, 12, of Abbotsford, BC, captured third (80, 85=165).

The MJT Junior Girls 15-19 Champion’s trophy went to Tiegan Taylor, 17, of Kelowna, BC, after an impressive score of 70 on day two (77, 70=147).  “My irons were really good so I gave myself a lot of birdie chances,” commented Taylor following the tournament, “I’ve been playing well so it was nice to get my second MJT win.”  Runner-up was Rhiannon Jones, 18, of Westbank, BC, who shot 83, 76 (159).

Natasha Kozlowski, 14, of Prince George, BC, took home top prize in the MJT U15 Girls Division (76, 82=158).  Following the tournament, Kozlowski said, “Rachel Chung had me worried the second round because she was playing quite well on the front nine while I was struggling. I feel great about winning my division title especially since it is my first MJT tournament.” Runner-up Rachel Chung, 14, of Abbotsford, BC, shot 85, 84 (169).

Kozlowski, Overennay and Thornley were the eligible qualifiers for exemptions into the International Players Championship (IPC) presented by Miura Golf in Jasper, Alberta, this August. In addition, a total of 18 prizes were also awarded to Ford Long Drive, MJT Closest-to-the-Pin, and Golf Town Comeback Competition Winners in the tournament whose names are all listed on the tournament page on the MJT website.

The next Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop in the province is the MJT Ford Series at The Harvest Golf Club in Kelowna on July 18-19.  For more information on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
