Ross rules at MJT Atlantic Canada Tour Championship

Moncton, NB – (August 24, 2015) - Canada's number-one played junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, wound up the regular season with the MJT Atlantic Canada Tour Championship at Royal Oaks Golf and Estates in Moncton, NB, on August 22 and 23, where thunderstorms halted play twice during round one and caused four of the six divisions to complete a 27 versus 36 hole tournament.

Ending his season in style was MJT Junior Boys champion, 17-year-old Calvin Ross of Fredericton, NB, who shone over the two days shooting 71-70 (141) to win his third straight MJT of the season. "I feel excited to win in such a strong field," he said afterwards. Alexandre Belanger, 17, from St. Jacques, NB, had a great second round comeback to slide into second place 78-69 (147), but it wasn’t enough to catch Ross. Third place was taken by Sainte Marie De Kent native Brandon Cormier, who shot 73-75 (148).

Andre Savoie was victorious in the MJT Juvenile Division with a two day score of 76-76 (152). The 16-year-old from Moncton managed to edge out Memramcock native and fellow 16-year-old Maxime Gaudet by just one shot. Gaudet shot 76-77 (153) over the two days. In third place was Alexandre Boudreau of Dieppe, NB, who shot 78-76 (154). When asked for the main reason for his victory, Savoie said, “I played consistently. My putting was very good and my ball striking great coming in to the tournament and went well throughout.”

The MJT Bantam Boys division suffered from a shortened first round due to the thunderstorms, yet division champion Nathan Hogan still managed to shoot under par on the second day, going 42-70 (112). Hogan, a 13-year-old from Bathurst, NB, managed to hold off both Jonathan Lajoie, 14, Ste. Antoine, NB, who went 37-76 (113), and past winner Lukas Cormier, 13, from Ste. Marie-de-Kent, who went 42-74 (116). Hogan said after the two days that his motivation for winning the tournament was 'getting the spot to the MJT Invitational at Reunion Resort in Florida.'

The MJT Peewee Boys division saw Pierre-Luc Arsenault, 12, of Saint-Louis, NB, crowned division champion after a respectable 76 on the second day for a two day score of 37-76 (113). Owen Mullen, 12, of Truro, NS, placed second with a  35-84 (119), while third place was taken by Marc-Andre Gaudet, 11, shooting 42-82 (124).

In the MJT Girls 15-19 division, Claire Konning won her third MJT event of the season. The 18-year-old from Indian Mountain, NB, shot 37-74 (111) to win by five strokes over runner-up Meghan McLean, 16, from Port Williams, NS, who shot 36-80 (116). Third place was taken by Intervale, NB, native Laura Wesselius, whose two day score was 39-81 (120). Konning credited her victory to “playing consistently and giving myself lots of birdie looks and easy pins.”

The MJT Girls U15 division champion was 14-year-old Heather McLean from Port Williams, who shot 43-79 (122) in her third MJT victory of the season to win by six strokes. Second place was taken by Mackenzie Scott, 14, of Upper Hampstead, NB, (41-87=128), while Sarah Hold, 14, of Waterville, NB, took home third place. When asked why she decided to play in this event, McLean said, “I chose this event because the MJT always runs good tournaments and I really wanted to play Royal Oaks!”
