Grosart ends MJT career with playoff win at Carnmoney

DeWinton, AB – (August 12, 2015) – Junior golfers on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour were graciously treated to one of the finest private clubs in Calgary, Alberta, the last two days, competing for titles in six divisions in incredibly hot weather at the immaculate Carnmoney Golf and Country Club over August 11th and 12th.

A packed MJT Junior Boys 17-19 division was highlighted by a playoff, after two Calgarians, Carter Grosart (69-72) and Conaire Kehoe (70-71), tied for the lead with an excellent under-par total score of 141. 19-year-old Grosart managed to out-duel Kehoe and ended his MJT career with a win, saying, “This is my last junior event as I head out to college in Texas this Saturday.  I am really excited that I ended my junior career with a win.  I would also like to thank the MJT for coming out and running events.  These events really aided in my development and I know that I would not be going away to play in college if it wasn’t for you guys and all the hard work.”

The MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 champion was 15-year-old Zachary Farkas, of Calgary. Farkas played solid golf both days going 72-75 (147) to win by a margin of six shots over runner-up Nathan Stewart, 15, also of Calgary. Farkas entered without an MJT win under his belt but thanks to his great play managed to stay ahead of the field and earn his first victory. When asked what contributed most to his win, he said, “I was hitting it pretty good this week and got it up and down from some tough places. I came here to play because I wanted to make the MJT National Championship in Florida this November, and this is just the cherry on top!”

Brodie Shields-Tyler, a 14-year-old from Calgary, won in a tight race for first place in the MJT Bantam Boys 13-14 division. Shields-Tyler went 77-75 (152) to hold off fellow Calgary native Elias Theodossopoulos (81-74=155), as well as Swift Current, SK resident Griffin Wilson (78-78=156). When asked about what it took to take his second MJT victory of the year, Shields-Tyler said, “My main reason for winning is that I did not have any blow-up holes this week - I really tried to minimize my mistakes.”

The MJT Peewee Boys title was once again won by 11-year-old Hunter Thomson of Calgary. The three-time MJT champion went 71-75 (146) to win by a landslide margin of sixteen strokes over the field. Thomson said about his win, “I was very excited to find out I was the only player in the Bantam and Peewee Boys divisions to break par this weekend!” Thomas Sluka, 12, from Canmore, AB came second shooting 83-79 (162), while Richard Dou,12, from Calgary finished in third (79-88=167).

Lauren Cheng won her first ever MJT tournament this weekend in the MJT Girls 15-19 division. The 17-year-old from Calgary shot 84-82 (166) to finish ahead of Claire McMahon, 17, from Red Deer, AB (83-87=170). Cheng said, “I am very happy to win this today. I just finished summer school so I am very lucky to be able to come play this event at Carnmoney!”
