Second last MJT stop sees full field at Guelph Lakes

Guelph, ON – (September 14, 2014) – There were 76 junior golfers from across Ontario competing for titles in eight divisions during a cold, wet and soggy day at Guelph Lakes Golf and Country Club in Guelph, ON, last weekend, in the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Nationwide One Day Fall Series.

“We saw some really good play in our older divisions with a great even par round in the bantam division, lots of new faces and the kids really seemed to enjoy it,” commented MJT Tournament Director and PGA Professional, Mike Skimson.

The September 13th event comprised players on the MJT Mini Tour for ages 12 and under, as well as players up the age of 19 on the regular Tour. Mini Tour division winners were Oscar Feschuk, 10, of Toronto, in MJT Atom Boys, who shot a solid 79, and Rozlyn Rooke, 10, of Milton, in MJT Atom Girls, who shot 87 on the modified yardage course.  In the MJT Peewee Boys Division, 12-year old Aidan Hussey of Brighton shot 86 to claim the division title by one shot.

In the MJT Junior Boys 17-19 division, Matthew Wood, 19, of Hamilton, carded 76 to narrowly beat 19-year old Tyler LeBlanc of Windsor, (78) for the title.  “Most of the chips I hit today were inside four feet,” said Wood. “This win feels great; it’s nice to know that I shot the best score in my division for the day. With these weather conditions, it’s a respectable score.” Rounding out the top three on the podium was Per-Thomas Stormgaard, 19, of Orangeville, who shot 80.

Among MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 there was a tie for first place between 16-year old Jonathon Kerr of Cambridge and 15-year old Adam Nunes of Tecumseh, who both fired rounds of 77, with Kerr taking the title based on countback. “My personal highlight was almost holing my approach shot on the third hole and making the putt for a birdie,” said Kerr. “My goal is to finish strong this season and have another high finish in the next MJT event.” Parker Lobban, 16, of St. Clements, finished one back at 78 to come third.

MJT newcomer Peyton Callens, 14, of Langton, managed an even par 71 on the difficult Guelph Lakes course to win the MJT Bantam Boys 14 & Under title, and stated, “My putting helped me win today! It feels great because it was my first MJT event!”  Four strokes back was Nicklaus Naumovski, 14, of Hornby, who shot 75 for second spot, followed by Noah Romeo, 14, of Puslinch, who came third with a score of 87.

On the regular MJT tour of players up to age 19, Kristen Wong, 17, of Richmond Hill, ON, claimed the MJT Girls division title after carding a solid 78, beating out Cynthia Zhao, 14, of Toronto, who shot 86. “I had a total of seven one-putts which either matches my best or beats it by one!” said Wong. “It was honestly the key to my victory as making those up and downs really saved me.” Finishing in third place was 10-year-old Taylor Kehoe of Strathroy, who played up two divisions and shot an incredible 87.

Winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Kate Johnston of Ayr, Ben Davies of Cambridge, and Per-Thomas Stormgaard. In the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition, the division winners were Tatiana Tait of Waterloo, Jakson Kirk of Alma, Andrew Spencer of Guelph, and Tyler Leblanc.
