Great weather highlights MJT Prodigy Series in Burlington Montgomery and Raines win international exemptions

Burlington, ON. – (June 23, 2014) – Mike Skimson, PGA of Canada Professional and MJT Tournament Director, was happy to see beautiful weather and fantastic course conditions during the Maple Leaf Junior Tour’s Prodigy Series at Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington, ON, this past weekend. “This presented a top notch tournament venue to competitors,” he said. “It was also nice to see a player from Manitoba and three from New York State in the two-day tournament. We saw some tight battles in all four divisions.”

Brett Geiser, 19, of Markham, ON, closed with an even par round to win Low Overall and the MJT Junior Boys title (72, 71=143). Runner-up was Josh Montgomery, 17, of Ancaster, ON, who shot 75, 74 (149) to hold off Devin Bartlett, 17, of Cambridge, ON, (75, 75=150).

The MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 division had to be decided in a playoff after Mackenzie Raines, 15, of Kitchener, ON, and Paul Sung, 16, of Markham, shot identical rounds of 73, 76 (149) to tie for the lead. Raines won on the first playoff hole. Nicholas Kyriakou, 15, of Waterloo, ON, fired back-to-back 76’s to finish third in the division. (152 total).

One stroke separated each of the top three finishers on the MJT Bantam Boys 14 and under podium, with Carter Snowden, 14, of Kitchener, managing to hold onto his first round lead to claim the title (81, 78=159). Runner-up was Dylan Henderson, 13, of Waterloo (82, 78=160), while a fine closing round of 76 brought David Nunes, 13, of Tecumseh, ON, up into third place (85, 76=161).

Interviews with Boys division winners Geiser, Raines and  Snowden are posted on the MJT YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/maplejtgolf/videos.

2014 MJT National Girls Champion, Madison Easterbrook, 18, of Burlington, carded 78, 76 (154) on her former home course to win the Girls division title by five strokes over Sydney Shaw, 17, of Orchard Park, NY (80, 79=159). “My personal highlight was my shot on hole 11 the second day,” said Easterbrook, whose goal this season is to have a competitive scoring average in the mid 70’s. “I hit my shot off the tee very close to the hole and was able to make birdie after a double on hole 10. The key to my victory was being able to hit the greens after a poor tee shot. I was able to hit over and under trees to get onto the green which saved me strokes.”

Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition divisional winners were Kate Johnston (Brantford Golf and Country Club) of Ayr, ON, Lukas Cowen (Pike Lake Golf Club) of Clifford, ON, Dennis Weber of Ancaster and Dalton Clifford (Whistle Bear Golf Club) of Kitchener. In the MJT Sundog Skills Competition, the winners were Sydney Shaw (Orchard Park Country Club) of Orchard Park, NY, Lukas Cowen (Pike Lake Golf Club) of Clifford, ON, John Hickson (Twenty Valley Golf Club) of Grimsby, ON, and Tom Carroll (Credit Valley Golf Club) of Mississauga, ON. Golf Town Comeback Awards for best second day improvements in score went to Kate Johnston, Adam Jordan (Brooklea Golf Club) of Penetang, ON, Marcus Hyunho Lee of Oakville and Mitchell Hardy (Whistle Bear Golf Club) of Kitchener.
