Potter’s MJT win secures FCWT Notre Dame University event spot

Tottenham, ON – (May 26, 2014) – Gray Potter, 16, of Glen Williams, ON, won Low Overall and the MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 title with solid rounds of 77, 78 (155) in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Nationwide Series at Woodington Lake Golf Club in Tottenham, ON, this past weekend, clinching the second win of his MJT career and an exemption into the Future Collegiate World Tour’s (FCWT) Notre Dame University event in October 2014.

Last year, two other MJT members, Craig Stefureak of Caledonia and Daniel Knapp of Burlington, qualified through the MJT for this and ended up finishing second and third respectively in the 2013 FCWT event.

The MJT’s two-day Woodington Lake tournament played out in sunny weather on May 24th and 25th, with junior golfers competing for titles in four divisions. Runner-up to Potter was 15-year-old Mackenzie Raines of Kitchener, ON, who shot 85, 75 (160) and third place in the division went to Joshua Taylor, 15, of Barrie, ON (85, 79=164).

Great back-to-back rounds of 77 gave Meghan Bennett, 18, of Pickering, ON, a wide winning margin in the MJT Girls division. Bennett is a MJT veteran with many top finishes to her credit. Cynthia Zhao, 13, of Toronto, ON (87, 93) and Alex Amos, 18, of Komoka, ON (95, 87) rounded out the top three Girls finishers.

It took a playoff to determine the MJT Junior Boys 17-19 winner as Mitchell Hardy, 17, of Kitchener, (84, 89), after a three-way tie for first place between Hardy, Callum Biehn, 17, of Georgetown, ON (89, 84) and Tyler Watson, 19, of Guelph, ON (89, 84).

Angelo Giantsopoulos, 14, of Richmond Hill, ON, came from behind to move up five places and scoop the MJT Bantam Boys 14 and under title after carding 88, 77 (165). Second place finisher was Connor Rochon, 14, of Toronto (79, 87=166) and Parker Lee, 13, of Oro Medonte, ON, came third (84, 85=169).

The next Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop in Ontario is the MJT Team Canada Qualifier at Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor on June 7th and 8th, a qualifier to shortlist players for MJT Team Canada to Australia. For more information or to register please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
