Harrison qualifies for San Diego Junior Am at MJT Mountain View Credit Union Classic

Olds, AB. – (June 23, 2014) – Andrew Harrison of Camrose, AB, was low overall in the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Mountain View Credit Union Classic at Olds Golf Club in Olds, AB, on June 21st and 22nd, qualifying for a spot in the Future Champions Golf San Diego Junior Amateur in January 2015.

“We had some ‘iffy’ weather which seems to be the case every year but the two-day tournament went off without a hitch,” said MJT Tournament Director and PGA Professional, Trent Matson. “And huge thanks for the fifth year of sponsorship from Mountain View Credit Union.  Their sponsorship in the Olds community is seen everywhere.  It is really nice that they continue to support the MJT and junior golf.”

Harrison, 17, battled his older brother Michael for top honours and fired 73-72 (145) to win Low Overall and the MJT Junior Boys 17-19 title. “It is my first win of the year on any tour so it feels great to win today,” he exclaimed.  “I made an eagle on number 14 when my brother closed it to one shot.  He was applying the heat and (the eagle) was the difference.”  Michael Harrison, 19, shot 75-73 (148) to come second, followed by a foursome of players who finished tied for third place at 155: Derek Roach, 18, of Calgary, AB, Cory Selander, 17, of Prince Albert, SK, Bryce Melville, 18, of Morinville, AB, and Jared Nicolls, 18, of Ponoka, AB.

In the Girls Division, 16-year-old Kenna Hughes of Calgary claimed her first victory of the year carding rounds of 84-76 (160).  Hughes was excited for her win, and said, “I’m hoping that it will give me confidence going in to Westerns next week and provincials after that.”  Finishing in second place was 18-year old Gina Kowalchuk, of Lethbridge, AB, who shot 87-81 (168) while Clare McMahon, 16, of Red Deer, AB, finished third after rounds of 91-95 (186).

14-year old Ronnie Postnikoff of Medicine Hat, AB, carded 79-73 (152) to come from well behind and claim the MJT Bantam Boys 14 & Under title - his first win on the MJT Tour.  “It feels great to win!” said Postnikoff. “I have had chances before and blown it, so this was the first time I held it together.”  Finishing one shot back was MJT veteran Ben Farrington, 14, of Fort McMurray, AB, who carded 80-73 (153), while first-round leader Kai Iguchi, 13, of Banff, AB, stumbled after a fine opening round of 71 to close with 83 and finish third (154 total score).

In the MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 Division, 16-year old Jordan Biollo of Calgary won his first MJT gold medal after shooting consistent rounds of 80-80 (160).  “Winning my first event is definitely the highlight,” stated Biollo.  “I have been training a lot and it is finally paying off.”  Placing second in the division was Grant Numrich, 16, of Red Deer, who shot 79-82 (161) to finish one shot back while MJT newcomer Lucas Schmaus of Spruce Grove, AB, finished third with 84-79 (163).

Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition divisional winners were Kenna Hughes, Keighton McNab of Saskatoon, SK, Grant Numrich and Kolby Vold of Ponoka, while in the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin, the winners were Clare McMahon of Red Deer, Korbin Allan of Lyalta, AB, Grant Numrich and Andrew Chelack of Calgary. Golf Town Comeback Awards for best second day improvement in score went to Grace Cho of Edmonton, Joshua Burlet of Edmonton, Alexander Smith of Calgary, and Josh Livingstone of Kindersley, SK.
