MJT finishes off successful season at University Golf Club

Vancouver, BC – (October 6, 2014) – Another successful season on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour came to a close at University Golf Club in Vancouver, BC, on Saturday, October 4th, where a full field of junior golfers enjoyed a great golf course and beautiful weather in the MJT Nationwide One Day Fall Series. “We have once again seen a high level of participation and some outstanding results from junior golfers,” said Murray Poje, MJT Executive Director and PGA Professional.

The Low Overall title was shared by Josh Miller, 17, of Saanichton, BC, and James Kim, 16, of Vancouver, who both shot 73 to win their divisions of MJT Junior Boys 17-19 and Juvenile Boys 15-16 respectively.

Miller cited his five birdies as key to his first MJT victory, stating, “I got off to a poor start and the two players in my group seemed solid, but I battled back after two doubles. The course was in great condition and the greens were awesome. I’m happy that all the hard work I put in throughout the summer is paying off.” Runner up in Junior Boys was Austin Bosquet, 17, of Coldstream, BC, who shot 74, and third place went to Tyler Leclair, 17, of North Vancouver, BC (76).

Juvenile champion, Kim, finished birdie-birdie to win his division title by one stroke over Nicolas Miu, 15, of Richmond, BC, and said, “It feels good to win especially after coming second at the previous MJT.” Third place was claimed by Harry Huang, 15, of Vancouver, who carded 75.

It was a repeat victory in a sizeable field of Girls for Sarah Lawrence, 16, of Duvall, WA, who fired 75 to beat Tiffany Kong, 13, of Vancouver, by two strokes. “Making three birdies and lots of long putts were the highlights for me and reasons for winning,” said Lawrence. “It feels great – this is my second MJT win in a row.” Richmond’s Kathrine Chan, 14, carded 80 for third place.

A stellar even-par round of 72 also secured a second win in a row for Khan Lee, 14, of Surrey, BC, in the Bantam Boys 14 and under division. “It feels great to win my final Bantam division by draining a birdie putt at the last hole to win it by one,” he said. Tough competitor, Raymond Li, 13, of Vancouver, came in second with a 73. Richmond’s Top Lau and Ethan Wong tied for third after both shot rounds of 80.

Winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Tiffany Kong, Preston Chan of Vancouver, Mathew McConnachie of Surrey, and Eric Hooper of Richmond. In the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition, the division winners were Bethany Ma of Vancouver, Freddy Sun of Vancouver, Connor Atkinson of Bow, WA and Josh Miller.

This was the final Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop in the country for the 2104 season. Qualified players will next compete at the MJT Boston Pizza National Championship at The Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix, AZ, November 14th to 16th.
