Hurd sets the pace on MJT at Cooke Municipal Golf Club

Prince Albert, SK – (July 1, 2013) – Perfect weather greeted the players in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Nationwide Series/Golf Saskatchewan Order of Merit Series in Prince Albert on June 29th and 30th, where the host site of Cooke Municipal Golf Course was in phenomenal shape for the most-played junior tour in Canada.

The MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 title went to local 16-year old Zach Hurd of Prince Albert, who carded 68-78 (146) to claim Low Overall honours and secure a qualifying spot in the Future Collegiate World Tour’s FCWT PGA West event in La Quinta, California, this December.  “I was able to hit the ball well off the tee and play confidently,” said Hurd, noting “both Cory and Stacey were chasing me coming down the stretch.” Finishing tied for second in the division at 150 total score were Cory Selander, 16, of Prince Albert, who shot 78-72, and Stacey Faron Genaille, 16, of Mafeking, SK, who shot 74-76.

MJT veteran Liam Courtney, 18, of Saskatoon, SK, edged out Kyle Wiebe by one shot to take home the MJT Junior Boys 17-19 title by shooting 78-77 (155).  “It came down to the last hole between Kyle and myself,’ said Courtney. “Tt felt good to finally have some hard work show.”  Runner-up Wiebe, 17, of Madison, SK, shot 80-76 (156) while Tyrin Foley, 17, of Bengough, SK, carded 78-82 (160) to finish third in the division.

Prince Albert’s Brooke Hobson, 14, shot 83-78 (161) to take home top spot in the Girls Division.  Hobson credited her driver as her main club, which allowed her to hit more greens.  She added, “It was great to see that I could play decently under pressure, but know that I can do better also.”  Finishing in second place was Kayla Sawchuk, 14, also of Prince Albert, while Alexandria Bernier, 16, of Meadow Lake, SK, finished third.

In the Bantam Boys 14 and under division, Kyle Schnieder, 14, of Prince Albert, SK, ‘just worried about his play, not the others’ en-route to his first win on the MJT circuit after shooting 79-79 (158) to win in a tight race. Finishing two back in a tie for second were 14-year old Matt Bean of Saskatoon, who shot 83-77 and Kade Johnson, 14, of Yorkton, SK, who shot 81-79.

Divisional winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Keighton McNab of Saskatoon, DJ Sayese of Prince Albert, Liam Courtney of Saskatoon, and Alexandria Bernier of Meadow Lake, SK.  Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Justin Bourassa of Regina, DJ Sayese, Blake Zimmer of Regina, and Brooke Hobson. Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Griffin Wilson of Swift Current, Marc Sweeney of Saskatoon, Steven Adrian of Canwood, and Kayla Sawchuk.
