Playoff Victory for Roach on MJT Prodigy Series at Carnmoney

Calgary, AB – (July 18, 2013) –The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) made a three-day stop at the beautiful and well-manicured Carnmoney Golf Club in DeWinton, AB, from July 15th to 17th, where MJT Tournament Director and PGA of Canada Professional, Trent Matson, noted the quality of the facility. “What a great golf course! The course was in fantastic shape, but there was a huge premium on hitting fairways and greens this week,” he said. Players vied for division titles plus the event was a qualifier for the Texas Junior Golf Tour’s (TJGT) Holiday Classic at Barton Creek this December in Austin, Texas.

Derek Roach, 17, of Calgary, AB, shot 79-73-76 (228) won the MJT Junior Boys 17-19 division and the spot to Texas in a one hole playoff against 17-year old Calgarian Scott McNichol (78-72-78=228). “Scott was in trouble in the playoff, so I was thinking that I just needed to hit the green – which I didn’t.  I missed the green and got it up and down for the win,” said Roach. “It feels great to win.  I leave for college on August 2nd, so this is a nice finish.” Finishing third in the division was Doug Whitten, 18, of Medicine Hat, AB, who shot rounds of 83-80-76 (239).

In the MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 division, Calgarians dominated again with 16-year old Brendan MacDougall firing consistent rounds of 78-79-78 (235) to win by four shots over three other players, who all finished regulation play at 239. MacDougall said, “I accomplished one of my yearlong goals today, by winning on the MJT!” The three-way tie for second was between 16 year-olds Scott Walker (79-87-73), Drew Dougherty (88-74-77) and Andrew Chelack (81, 81, 77).

Chris Horton, 14, of Calgary, carded excellent rounds of 71-74-73 (218) to win the MJT Bantam Boys 14 and under division. Highlighting his week was a hole-in-one on hole six at Carnmoney. “We were running down the hill and yelling,” said Horton of his hole-in-one. “We didn’t see it go in, but was very exciting for me.”  Runner-up in the division was Alexander Smith, 14, of Calgary, who shot solid rounds of 75-74-71 (220) to finish two shots back of Horton, while Matt Campbell, 14, of Calgary (77-75-80=232) rounded out the top three.
In the Girls division, MJT veteran Kat Kennedy, 18, of Okotoks, AB, shot 78-76-77 (231) to easily win the title, despite the newly signed member of the UBC Golf Team battling over the three days, fighting some putting woes.  “I need to work on my putting before Nationals,” said Kennedy. “I really want to play well at Nationals and make the cut.” Finishing in second place was Erin Farner, 18, of Calgary, who shot 90-84-86 (260) while Lauren Rutherglen, 16, of Kelowna, BC (93-88-87), finished tied for third with Tess O’Hara, 16, also of Calgary (95-84-89) after both players scored 268.

Divisional winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Rayna Oosterhuis of Edmonton, AB, Pierce Hawker of Calgary, Nolan Renwick of Calgary, and Connor Wutzke of Medicine Hat. Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Erin Farner, Pierce Hawker, Kyle Schubert of Calgary, and Mack Pretty of Priddis, AB. Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Tess O’Hara, Kade Gottfriedson of Calgary, Drew Dougherty and Zack Thys of Spruce Grove, AB.
