Zebediak, McIntyre, Kesterke and Vetesnik take titles at MJT’s Teulon stop

Teulon, MB – (July 28, 2012) – The final round of the two-day Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) tournament at teulon Golf Club in Teulon, MB, on July 26-27 saw great weather with a high of 26 degrees Celcius, and some good scoring in the four divisions among the full field of competitive young golfers.

Brett Zdebiak, 19, of Gimli, MB, and Links at the Lake Golf Club, won his first MJT title after firing 75-73 (148), taking low overall and the Boys 17-19 gold medal. “My highlight was starting five under through the first five holes on the back,” said Zbediak. “Jordan (Sinclair) was playing great. I had to make pars to stay ahead. It feels great (to win) after being in contention at the last tourney.” Runner-up in this division was Jordan Sinclair, 19, of Fort Frances, ON, and Heron Landing Golf Club, who closed with a fantastic 69 to pull right up the rankings after a shaky start (81–69=150). Third place went to Brayden Twist, 18, of Portage la Prairie, MB, (76–79=155).

Another first-time MJT winner was Aaron McIntyre, 15, of Winnipeg, MB, and Rossmere Golf Club, who edged Josh Neufeld, 15, of Altona, MB, by one stroke to capture the Boys 14-16 gold medal with scores of 76–79=155, earning a spot in the Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour (RMJGT) Championship at McCormick Ranch in Scottsdale, AZ, USA, this December. “I thought all the greens were in great condition and the fairways were soft and ‘minty’,” said McIntyre, who claimed that ‘hitting pretty much all greens in regulation’ was key to his victory. He added, “Coming down the stretch I was thinking that I need to sustain my lead and at least par the final holes.” Neufeld finished runner-up at 78-78=156. The division saw a tie for third place at identical scores of 79-80=159 between Cole Peters, 16, of Steinbach, MB, and Stacy Genaille, 16, of Mafeking, MB.

Brendan Kesterke, 13, of Headingley, MB, a Breezy Bend Golf Club junior, fired 77–71=148 to continue his winning ways in Boys 13 and Under, securing his second gold medal this season by a five stroke margin over first-round leader Nathan Wright, 13, of Warren, MB, and South Interlake Golf Club, (75-78=153). Kesterke said, “My highlight was holing out for eagle on 11 from 82 yards, and being steady. It feels really good (to win) and even better to shoot under par.” Ted Glass, 13, of Winnipeg and Southwood Golf and Country Club, captured third in the division one stroke back of Wright after a career-best closing round of two-under-par (84–70=154).

Veronica Vetesnik, 15, of Winnipeg, who plays out of Pinecrest Golf Club, cleaned up in the Girls division, collecting her second gold medal after posting solid scores of 83–85=168 and taking home both the Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition prizes. Runner-up was Katherine McGlenen, 14, also of Winnipeg and a St. Charles Country Club junior, who came back on day two with a fine 79 (95 – 79=174) while third place went to Stefanie Lasuik, 16, of Warren, who also carded a great final round (99 – 80=179).

The other divisional skills competition winners were Marco Trstenjak of Winnipeg, Josh Hofer of Warren, and Brett Zdebiak in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition, and Nathan Wright, Joshua Martineau of East St. Paul, MB, and Colton Lott of Gimli in the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin. Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Zak Bannatyne of Winnipeg, Chayse Brawdy of Headingley, Mackenzie Nelson of Winnipeg, and Stefanie Lasuik.

The next MJT Manitoba event runs August 14-15 at Transcona Golf Club in Winnipeg – the MJT-Manitoba PGA Junior Championship presented by National Bank Financial, which is also a qualifier for AJGA Performance Stars and the Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) TPC Sawgrass event in the USA.
