Teron shines through rain-shortened RedTail Landing event on MJT

For Immediate Release - Nisku, AB – (July 28, 2011) –
Following three days of heavy rain, the skies finally cleared on July 25th in time for round one of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Prodigy Series at Redtail Landing in Nisku, Alberta. The story, however, was not so pleasant on day two as again the downpour resumed and play was forced to stop. As the course became unplayable, the decision was made the shorten the 36 hole event to 18 holes and award prizes based on the round one leaders. Occasionally, in situations like this, some players may feel an asterisk should apply to winner’s names, however for the case of low overall leader Jesse Teron, his number will speak for itself.

Teron, 17, of Red Deer, AB, fired a six under 66 to firmly grab first place and was awarded first place for the Boy’s 17-19. With his win, Teron also receives an exemption into the Future Collegiate’s World Tour (FCWT) Notre Dame University Championship, to be played at Warren Golf Club at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana, this October. “I have been working on this since last August, and it finally came together,” he said. “This is my lowest competitive round ever! This is a great tour, good competition and a great course. Overall, the best tour! It feels awesome (to win)!! I have not won since August of 09, so this feels great to break through. It was my first bogey free round ever!”

Following behind Teron’s great round on day one were three boys, all scoring a 74 and tying for second place were Ryan Dyck, 18, of St. Albert, AB, Derek Field, 18, of Calgary, AB and James Stewart, 17, of Spruce Grove, AB.

Twelve year old Brendan Brown was the only player in the Boy’s 13 and Under Division to record a round in the 70’s. Brown, from Calgary, came in with a 76 that he thought would put him in good position for the tournament and ended up winning his fifth MJT title this season. “My birdie on number 7 and believing in myself were key,” he said. “It feels great to win another.” In second place with an 82 was Fort MacLeod’s Trent Ducharme, 13. Only two shots behind at 84 and likely still yearning for a second round improvement was Michael Hoang, 13, of Calgary.

The second lowest round of the tournament belonged to 14 year old Jason Martens of Edmonton, AB, who shot a 71. Martens would be awarded first place in the Boy’s 14-16 Division and also won the Sundog Skills Competition for his par three closest-to-the-pin shot. “It feels good to shoot my first under par round in a tournament!” he summed up. Winning second place, with a 75, was Ethan Leier, 14 of Calgary, and only one shot behind, coming in at 76, was 16 year old Brett Hawken of Wetaskiwin, AB.

In the Girl’s division, Erin Martens, 16, won with an 85 in a tough competition, and cited as her highlight, “My eagle when I holed out from 106 yards.” Martens added she felt, “Very excited – this is my first win!” Only one shot behind and settling for a tie for second place at 86 were Gina Kowalchuk, 15, of Lethbridge, AB, and Alanna Jefferis, 19, of Sherwood Park, AB. Kowalchuk, would also go home with the Sundog Eyewear Skills Competition prize for her closest-to-the-pin.

In the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition, the winners were Kyle Kimmie (Lone Wolf Golf Club), Dakota Smith (Public Players Club), Cole Feth (Camrose, AB) and Sydeny Johnson-Parker (Glendale Golf Club). Other winners in the Sundog Skills Competition included: Michael Lavorato (Canyon Meadows Golf Club) and Matthew Chemago (Blackhawk Golf Club).
