SCOBIE SCOOPS LOW OVERALL ON MJT AT NATIONAL PINES

Barrie, ON – (August 2, 2010) –
The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) visited Barrie for the very first time in its 12 year history on the July 31 – August 1 long weekend, to introduce players in the region to Canada’s only national junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals, and qualify an eligible player for a paid entry into a Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) event of their choice in the USA.

Matthew Scobie, 15, of Ajax, fired a great opening round score of 69 to lead the field and held onto his lead with a 75 on day two to finish at 144 total score, scooping the Boys 14-16 gold medal, low overall, and the FCWT spot. “I was able to make some key putts,” said Scobie. “My highlight was my overall performance on the par fives – I was able to take advantage of them. It feels really good to know I can compete against the players that were in this field this week.” There was a tie for the silver medal behind Scobie in his division at 150 total score between Andrew Moffat, 16, of Brantford (77-73), and Keaton Jones, 15, of Kitchener (71-79).

In the Boys 17-19 division, Sterling Emery, 19, of Orangeville, won his third MJT title of the season after shooting 74-75 (149) to beat silver medalist Dylan Hamara, 17, of Cambridge (75-76), by two strokes. Emery cited ‘staying consistent’ as key to his gold medal win. “I almost made a two on nine,” he added. “It feels good – the third win of the season.” The bronze medal went to Taylor Prilisauer, 18, of Cambridge, who carded 83-76 (159).

MJT newcomer, Nicholas Quesnel, 13, of Sudbury, fired 84-75 (159) to win the Boys 13 and under gold medal in his first MJT outing, and found the ‘entire second round’ a tournament highlight. “I feel good (about winning) because it is my first MJT tournament.” Max Clift, 12, of Kitchener, was three strokes back with scores of 87-75 (162) to finish second for the second time this season, while Connor Doucette, 13, of Waterloo, continued his strong play with rounds of 86-82 (168), claiming the bronze medal.

Kirsten Degutis, 16, of Waterloo, won the MJT Girls division gold medal after shooting back-to-back rounds of 92, saying key to her win was ‘not losing my temper when I had a bad shot.’ She added, “I am happy I won but would like to have played better.” Alisha Corringham, 15, of Pickering, shot her best final round on the MJT to date and took silver (99-90) while Maddy Piccininni, 16, of Toronto, settled for third place two strokes back. Corringham cleaned up prize-wise at the tournament as she won her division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Closest -to-the-Pin Competitions as well as the Golf Town Comeback award for the best improvement in score from round one to round two.

The other Mr. Lube Long Drive division winners were Quesnel, Hamara and Moffat, who also won his division’s Sundog Closest -to-the-Pin Competition. The other Closest-to-the-Pin winners were Emery and Clift, who also won his group’s Golf Town Comeback Award together with Stan McElroy of Kitchener.

The MJT now moves to Caledon with a two-day event at Caledon Golf Club on August 7th and 8th, another qualifier for a paid entry into a Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) event in the USA. For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
