EMERY WINS MJT QUAGMIRE GOLF CLASSIC IN PLAYOFF

Ancaster, ON – (May 24, 2010) –
A great field of top junior golfers competed over the May long weekend in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Quagmire Golf Classic at Mystic Golf Club in Ancaster, vying for division titles and qualifying spots. Quagmire Golf has been a sponsor of the MJT for four years, and their tournament qualified players for international exemptions into a Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) event in the USA and a spot into the Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championship in Illinois.

In the Boys 17-19 division, Sterling Emery, 19, of Orangeville, was six under after 16 holes, with Brad Burgess, 17, of St. Catherine’s, four shots back. Emery finished bogey, double bogey to score 78-69 and tie with Burgess (75-72), forcing a playoff. Emery won on the first playoff hole after hitting it to seven feet while Burgess went in the bunker. “The course handled the rain well and the greens were nice and fast,” summed up Emery. “But key to my win was just staying positive after blowing a five shot lead. I feel good about winning, I just wish it wasn’t in a playoff. I want to try and win as many events and get as many points as I can.” Burgess is the eligible qualifier for the FCWT spot, as Emery is already 19. Brett Kennedy, 17, of Kitchener, fired 76-78 to place third in the division.

In the Boys 14-16 division, Colin Abbot, 16, of Port Stanley, won in his first MJT outing after firing 77-75 to edge runners’ up Kody Fry, 15, of Grand Valley, (78-75) and Daniel Wilson, 16, of Stratford, (76–77) by one stroke.

Madison Easterbrook, 14, of Burlington, continued her winning ways on the MJT, firing a great closing round to post scores of 86–73 for a four stroke victory in the Girls division. “The course required you to play smart - the key to winning was play smart and don’t do anything that could put you in danger,” she summarized. “It is a tough course I didn’t let the hazards scare me and it paid off.” The other top finishers were MJT newcomers Laura Moutrey, 17, of Shelburne, who shot 79–84, and Meghan Bennett, 14, of Pickering, who carded 89-78 to take third.

Craig Stefureak, 13, of Caledonia, won his second MJT title in as many starts after firing 79–81 in the Boys 13 and under division, claiming the paid entry into the Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championship. “The weather first day was not promising but the course played well the whole time - I'd rate the course a solid 9 of 10 as it presented a very good challenge,” said Stefureak. “I feel great (about winning). The competition is always good and it was a good match. I'd like to play more consistent golf and I'd like to win the MJT overall so I can go to Arizona for the championship.” Runner-up was Conner Watt, 13, of Mississauga, who carded rounds of 85-81 in his first MJT outing, while another newcomer, Joey Hetherman, 13, of Burlington, finished third (88–79) just one stroke back.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Bryce Hardie, 12, of Brampton, Andrew Moffat, 16, of Brantford, Declan Kaster, 18, of Ayr, and Monica Gabriele, 14, of Mississauga. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Joey Hetherman, Daniel Wilson, Brad Burgess and Dylaney Day, 11, of Toronto. A special new category of Golf Town ‘Comeback Award’ winners included Grace Chung of Richmond Hill in Girls, Eric Mason of Toronto in Boys 13 and under, Phil Leahy of Waterloo in Boys 14-16, and Dylan Hamara of Cambridge in Boys 17-19.
