KLUGHART CROWNED FINORA CLASSIC CHAMPION

Swift Current, SK – (June 14, 2010) –
MJT veteran, Danny Klughart, 17, of Prince Albert, blazed around the Elmwood golf course in Swift Current with a three-under-par 139 total score (69-70) over the June 12th-13th weekend to claim low overall and the Boys 17-19 gold medal in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Finora Classic. Klughart was playing in the two-day tournament with many competitive junior golfers, vying for division titles and a paid exemption into a Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) event in the USA.

The spot went to Klughart, who commented, “It feels great to hit the ball good and putt good at the same time and finally put it all together. The MJT helps prepare me for provincials.” Three strokes back was Braeden Mueller, 18, of Regina, who fired a great closing round of 68 to claim the silver medal in this division, while Jared Tupper, 17, of Meadow Lake, shot 72-71 to take bronze.

Aaron Vogel, 16, of Regina, improved on his second place finish last weekend at the Finora Classic in North Battleford and shot back-to-back rounds of 73 to win the Boys 14-16 division gold medal. “It feels good to finally have my game altogether and shoot two consistent rounds,” he said. Runner-up was Daegan Wall, 15, also of Regina, who carded 78-73 (151). There was a tie for third place at 153 total score between Cody Schapansky, 16, of Swift Current (77-76), and Riley Grona, 14, of Coronach (73-80).

Nolan Mastel, 13, of Medicine Hat, Alberta, edged last week’s champion, Nathan Corrin, by one to win the Boys 13 and under division with scores of 80-80 (160). “My driving and chipping were great – and ringing the bell on 16!” said Mastel. “This is a great tour with good competition and it feels great to finally hit the ball consistently and play well.” Corrin, 13, of Moose Jaw, shot 82-79 (161). The bronze medal went to Zach Hurd, 13, of Prince Albert, who shot 87-81 (168).

In the Girls division, Kaitlyn Jahnke, 18, of Herbert, fired 78-85 (163) to breeze to victory. “The front nine on the first day was the highlight for me,” she said. “I play MJT because there is a lot of opportunity and good experiences. My goal this season is to start playing consistently in tournaments.” MJT newcomer Ricki-Lee Scott, 15, of Whitewood, placed second (93-87) and Nikki Semrau, 15, of Medicine Hat, Alberta, placed third (100-96).

Jahnke also won her division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition; the other winners were Nathan Corrin, Taylor Cook, 16, of North Battleford, and Braeden Mueller. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Nolan Mastel, Jessy-Lee Lacher, 15, of Swift Current, Jordan Johns, 19, of Fort Qu’Appelle and Lacey Duncan, 15, of Swift Current. Many draw prizes were also awarded, as well as a special new category of Golf Town ‘Comeback Awards’ to Jacob Ditlove, 18, of Saskatoon, Zachary Taylor, 15, of Saskatoon, Hunter Arnold, 12, of Yorkton and Ricki Lee Scott, 15 of Whitewood.

The penultimate stop on the four-tournament MJT Saskatchewan series is on June 29th and 30th at the site of the provincial championships this summer – Cooke Golf Club in Prince Albert – and is a qualifier for the Srixon International Junior Classic in Australia.
