MATHES ARIZONA-BOUND AFTER MJT’S NOVA SCOTIA STOP

Shubenacadie, NS – Tremendous heat and a hurricane on the horizon proved no distraction for players competing in the Maple Leaf Junior Tour’s (MJT) CPGA Atlantic Junior Championship at The Links at Penn Hills this week as they focused on winning their division titles and on qualifying for the CAN-USA Team Matches at ASU Karsten Golf Club in Tempe, Arizona, this December.

Derek Mathes, 16, of Kitchener, ON, won low overall honours after closing with a one-under-par 71 to shoot 74-71 (145), claiming the MJT CPGA Atlantic Junior Boys 14-16 Champion title and the spot in the Arizona matches. Clearly on a roll, Mathes also won both the Mr. Lube Long Drive and the Sundog Skills (KP) Competitions in his division. “My key to winning was making par when I had to and driving the ball straight,” outlined Mathes.
