MATHES ARIZONA-BOUND AFTER MJT’S NOVA SCOTIA STOP

Shubenacadie, NS – Tremendous heat and a hurricane on the horizon proved no distraction for players competing in the Maple Leaf Junior Tour’s (MJT) CPGA Atlantic Junior Championship at The Links at Penn Hills this week as they focused on winning their division titles and on qualifying for the CAN-USA Team Matches at ASU Karsten Golf Club in Tempe, Arizona, this December.

Derek Mathes, 16, of Kitchener, ON, won low overall honours after closing with a one-under-par 71 to shoot 74-71 (145), claiming the MJT CPGA Atlantic Junior Boys 14-16 Champion title and the spot in the Arizona matches. Clearly on a roll, Mathes also won both the Mr. Lube Long Drive and the Sundog Skills (KP) Competitions in his division. “My key to winning was making par when I had to and driving the ball straight,” outlined Mathes. “The course was difficult, hard to read greens, good condition. It feels good to finally get a victory on the MJT.” Runner-up Jose Gabriel Pauig, 16, of Bedford, NS, who is en route to Scotland this weekend after winning a spot on MJT Team Canada at Antigonish Golf Club in June, posted 81-77 (158) for the tournament, beating last year’s defending champion, Jamie Sweet, 16, of Dartmouth, NS, who placed third carding back-to-back rounds of 80 for a 160 total.

Two-time China Junior Open player from the MJT, Sean Fraser, 18, of Sackville, NS, shot 77-77(154) and overtook first-round leader Craig Dale, 18, of East Mountain, NS, by a single stroke to win the MJT CPGA Atlantic Junior Boys 17-19 Champion title. “I was able to make some key putts on the back nine that kept me in it,” said Fraser. “This is a great tour that gives us a chance to play golf on a local, national and international stage. It’s always great to win on the MJT.” Runner-up Dale carded 75-80 (155) for the event and Marc Young, 19, of Georges River, NS, placed third with scores of 81-79 (160).

Myles Creighton, 13, of Digby, NS, ran away with the Boys 13 and under title for a second year in a row, shooting terrific rounds of 78-79 (157) for the win. “I had confidence in my game and I just played two solid rounds,” stated Creighton. “The course was beautiful, the MJT prizes are great, and I feel good about winning.” Runner-up Jake Lloy, 13, of Windsor, NS, posted scores of 96-97 (193), edging third place finisher Jarred Lowe,12, of Digby, by one stroke.

The other divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Jarred Lowe and Craig Dale, and in the Sundog Skills competition they were Jake Lloy and Dylan Coady, 18, of Antigonish.

With the Nova Scotia season at an end, players will now wait for notice on qualification for the MJT National Tour Championship at the Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa in Phoenix, AZ, November 21-22. For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 604-943-1645.
