CHRISTIANSEN ADDS TEXAS TO HIS ROSTER AT ELMWOOD

Swift Current, SK.-(June 15, 2009) – Elmwood Golf Club in Swift Current played host to the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Finora Classic this past weekend, and some great golf was played in the hot and breezy weather, with players battling tough pins and each other in four divisions. Also up for grabs was a spot in the Texas Junior Masters at the Hyatt Regency Hill Resort in San Antonio, TX, this July.

Jerry Christiansen, 16, of Air Ronge, shot an outstanding 70-70 (140) winning the Finora Classic boys 14-16 division title and nailing low overall score for the tournament which gives him the spot in Texas. “I scrambled well and managed to shoot good scores without my swing,” he said, referencing shaky parts of his game. “It feels good to know I can win without a perfect long game,” he added. Christiansen also qualified for MJT Team Canada to Scotland at the previous MJT Finora Classic in North Battleford, so is continuing his winning ways.

Runner-up in this division, with a super one-under second day round, was Danny Klughart, 16, of Prince Albert, who fired 73-70 (143). Aaron Vogel, 15, of Regina, turned in an incredible 68 on day two, but it wasn’t enough to oust Klughart from his second place seat. Vogel finished third in the division with 76-68 (144).

Very solid scores in the boys 17-19 division saw Brennan Rumancik, 18, of Maple Creek, come out on top with a well-played 73-70 (143) for the event. “I putted pretty well and I hit my driver extremely well too,” Rumancik said. “I feel great; I’m glad I could squeak out a win this weekend!”

Braeden Mueller, 17, of Regina, was close behind Rumancik with a rock-solid 72-72 (144), while Joshua Johns, 18, of Fort Qu’Appelle, was also in the running but finished third with after carding 71-75 (146).

MJT veteran Nathan Corrin, 12, of Moose Jaw shot an excellent 82-75 (157) to run away with the boy’s 13 and under division title, after putting well and hitting the greens. “I feel great,” he said, “this is my first win!” Second place went to Riley Grona, 13, of Coronach, who carded 87-86 (173) and Cory Sawchuk, 11, of Prince Albert, came in third with a solid 88-87 (175) for the two days.

Anna Young, 15, of Saskatoon, was on fire in the Girls division, claiming first place with great rounds of 78-74 for a 152 total score. Runner-up was Kaitlyn Blackmer, 18, of Swift Current, with 86-84 (170) and third place went to Katieleigh Avram, 18, of Swift Current, just one stroke back at 85-86 (171).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Nathan Corrin, Matthew Erickson, 15, of Saskatoon, Anna Young and Brennan Rumancik. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Cory Sawchuk, Joey Vanpinxteren, 16, of Saskatoon, Katieleigh Avram, and Jock Kriegler, 18, of Saskatoon. There were also many draw prize winners in the tournament.

The MJT winds up its Saskatchewan schedule on July 14th and 15th with the Srixon Series CPGA of Saskatchewan Junior Championship at the Willows Golf Club in Saskatoon, a qualifier for the Jack Newton International Junior Classic in Sydney, Australia.
