WERRE BLOWS AWAY FIELD AT MJT’S WINDSWEPT STOP IN COALDALE

Coaldale, AB – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) teed off it’s 2009 Alberta schedule with the 1st Choice Savings Series at Land-O-Lakes Golf Club in Coaldale this past weekend, where players in four divisions battled it out in very strong winds over the two-days, with exemptions into the Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) National Championship in Florida, USA, up for grabs.

The Land-O-Lakes course was defenseless against the onslaught of Ryan Werre, 16, of Redcliff, as he posted 65-70 for a two-day total of 7-under-par in the gusty conditions. The five-year MJT member made a ton of putts, hit it well and was rewarded for sticking to his game plan, claiming the Boys 14-16 division title and low overall score.

“My highlight was making eagle on #4 the first day, it got everything going,” said Werre, who wins one of the two spots to Florida. “On the second day I just thought to break par - then no one could catch me. Play smart, don't do anything stupid. Evan (Cowan) had me worried on the front nine, but I just stuck to my game plan and didn't go for anything I shouldn't have. This win is a good start to the year, I feel like it's a long time coming.”

Evan Cowan, 16, of Coaldale, finished second in this division at 71-74 (145) which were great scores in the wind, earning the six-year MJT member the second FWCT exemption. In third place was Riley Fleming , 15, of Airdrie, who had a rough first day but followed it up with a good, solid second round in those conditions (82-79).

With the wind gusting to 80kph by the end of play on day two, Lethbridge’s Jace James, 17, with Calgarians Adam Knudson, 17, and Rhys Tosczak, 17, all tied at 150 total score in the Boys 17-19 division. James battled through to finish with a great 73, Knudson with a 74 and Tosczak with 79. All were tied coming down the stretch, but James emerged with the low score on the final round and took the division title as a result. “It was very close, we were one stroke out and I was just thinking, play the course, not the players,” said James, who is a veteran eight year MJT member. “My putting was on key.”

In the Boys 13 and under division, Patrick Murphy, 12, of Crossfield, began his season with a victory, carding great rounds of 75-71 (146) in the windy conditions. “My tournament highlights were on #10 when I hit a wedge to 1", and on #15 when I sank a 25' for birdie,” said Murphy, who played great golf and made few mistakes. Nick Scrymgeour, 13, of Calgary, shot back-to-back rounds of 80 to place second in the division, while Lachlan Spriddle, 11, of Lethbridge, took third after shattering his best tournament round (89 on day one) by 13 shots to score 76 on day two.

Kristen Jensen, 17, of Picture Butte, followed up a "shaky" first round 90 with a solid 80 on day two to win the Girls division after making some key putts. “It feels very good (to win),’ she said. “It was my goal last year and it didn't happen and then it happens the first event this year!” Finishing second was Becky Martin, 15, of Medicine Hat (95-82), followed by Emma Degenhardt, 15, of Lethbridge (89-94).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Patrick Murphy, Andrew Ritchot, 16, of Lethbridge, Matt Whittaker, 17, of Lethbridge, and Sydney MacDonald, 15, of Calgary. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Brendan Brown, 9, of Calgary, Ryan Werre, Jaret Lindenbach, 19, of Regina, SK, and Kirsten Jensen.

The MJT continues it’s Alberta schedule on April 25th and 26th with the 1st Choice Savings Spring Series at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort in Lethbridge, a qualifier for the 57th annual East Aurora International Junior Masters in New York State.
