WERRE BLOWS AWAY FIELD AT MJT’S WINDSWEPT STOP IN COALDALE
Coaldale, AB – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) teed off it’s 2009 Alberta schedule with the 1st Choice Savings Series at Land-O-Lakes Golf Club in Coaldale this past weekend, where players in four divisions battled it out in very strong winds over the two-days, with exemptions into the Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) National Championship in Florida, USA, up for grabs.
The Land-O-Lakes course was defenseless against the onslaught of Ryan Werre, 16, of Redcliff, as he posted 65-70 for a two-day total of 7-under-par in the gusty conditions. The five-year MJT member made a ton of putts, hit it well and was rewarded for sticking to his game plan, claiming the Boys 14-16 division title and low overall score.
“My highlight was making eagle on #4 the first day, it got everything going,” said Werre, who wins one of the two spots to Florida. “On the second day I just thought to break par - then no one could catch me. Play smart, don't do anything stupid. Evan (Cowan) had me worried on the front nine, but I just stuck to my game plan and didn't go for anything I shouldn't have. This win is a good start to the year, I feel like it's a long time coming.”
