PIMENTEL BEATS THE HEAT AT MJT’S SRIXON SWAN-E-SET STOP

PITT MEADOWS, B.C. - (July 19, 2009) – Mason Pimentel withstood the heat of hot summer weather and fierce competition to shoot the low overall score at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Srixon Series at Swan-e-set Bay Resort in Pitt Meadows on July 17th and 18th, winning the Boys 14-16 title and a spot in the Can-USA Team Matches at ASU Karsten Golf Club in Tempe, Arizona, this December.

“Making that birdie putt on five helped me make more birdies throughout the second round and helped my confidence a lot – that was the round I needed to win the tournament,” said Pimentel, 15, of Richmond, who fired 77-71 (148). “The course was really great to play and I enjoyed the scenery as much as playing the golf course itself. It feels great getting this first place finish since it’s been a while since I’ve last won on this tour.”

Runner-up in the 14-16 division was Tae-In Lee, 16, of Maple Ridge, who shot 79-77 (156). There was a three-way tie for third place at 162 total score between Reid Simpson of Delta (81-81), and North Vancouver’s Sean Moen (81-81), and Michael Kim (75-87).

John Lee, 18, of Port Coquitlam, cited his ball striking as key to victory in the Boys 17-19 division after firing back-to-back rounds of 75 for a 150 total score, beating runner-up Nate Beauchamp, 19, of Burnaby, by three strokes. “I feel good (about winning),” said Lee, “It gives me the confidence to play in the Future Links next week.” Third place went to Alex Thierman, 19, of Maple Ridge (78-79=157).

The Boys 13 and under champion was Kevin Vigna, 13, of Burnaby, who carded 78-74 (152) for his second MJT title this season. “My eagle on hole 10 was a highlight,” he said. “Conditions were awesome and the course played short which definitely helped my game. I feel great about winning again and I hope I’m ready for Northview (the next MJT stop).” There was a tie for second place in the division at 159 total score between Jun Kang, 13, of Port Moody, (78-81) and Oscar Baek, 13, of Coquitlam (77-82).

Jenny An, 16, of Coquitlam, broke through after two second place finishes on the MJT this season to win the Girls division title in style after firing back-to-back rounds of 76 for a 152 total. “Keeping par, not panicking, and believing ‘I can do this’ kept me from any major mistakes,” she said afterwards, citing ‘everything’ as her tournament highlight. “The people were very nice like every time. Also I love the Swan-e-Set Resort Course. The greens were very fast so it was a bit hard but I loved it. I’m very happy – this is my first win.” Runner-up was Valentina Trillo, 15, of Port Moody, who pulled into second place after a great closing round (84-76=160), while Brooklyn Kraakman, 15, of Deroche, took third place in her first MJT outing this season (80-85=165).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Oscar Baek, Victor Baptist, 14, of Oliver, Ryan Saran, 17, of Langley, and Valentina Trillo. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Henry Lee, 10, of Coquitlam, Matt Matheson, 15, of West Vancouver, Alex Jardine, 17, also of West Vancouver, and Jenny An.

The next MJT tournament in BC is the MJT Odlum Brown Classic - PGA of BC Junior Championship at Northview Golf Club in Cloverdale, July 27th to 29th, where automatic exemptions can be won into the BCGA Junior Championships.
