Helgeson and Minion join MJT Team Canada at South Interlake Qualifier

WARREN, MB: The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s double qualifier on Father’s Day weekend at the South Interlake Golf and Country Club in Warren, MB, proved to be another weekend of outstanding golf in decent weather conditions with players vying for spots on MJT Team Canada to both the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Matches in St. Andrews, U.K. and to the International Junior Golf Invitational (IJGI) in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Brock Helgeson, 17 of Balmertown, ON, came out to win this tournament showing tremendous focus throughout both days. Helgeson finished day one with a leading score of 76 thanks to a 30 foot putt on hole 16 for eagle, and then blew away the competition on day two with a “take no prisoners” score of 70, placing him four strokes ahead of the entire field with the Boys 17 and up title, overall low score in the tournament, and a spot on the team to Scotland. “Playing on the MJT gives me the experience I need and helps me get used to the pressure,” said Helgeson, who clearly demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure in Warren this weekend. Finishing second in the Boys 17 and up category was Burke Wiebe, 17, of Winnipeg, MB, with scores of 77-76 (153), while third place went to Daniel Moar, 17, of Portage la Prairie, MB (78-76=154).

Steve Minion, 16, of Winnipeg, started off day two one stroke back of the first-round leaders but pulled ahead to win the Boys 14-16 division title with scores of 76-74 (150), giving him the opportunity to represent Canada in Mexico by just a single stroke. Minion said his immediate goals for golf this season were simply to ‘win every tournament.’ “Playing MJT gives me good tournament experience,” he concluded. Runner-up in the division was Josh Wytinck, 16, of Glenboro, MB, who tied Minion on day two to finish at 77-74 (151). Third place went to Aaron Cockerill, 16, of Stony Mountain, MB, who shot a a two day total of 155 (79-76).

The Boys 13 and under category was convincingly won by Brenden Setter, 13, of Selkirk, MB, with a two-day total of 169 (87-82), six strokes ahead of his field. Setter is no stranger to first place, securing his fourth straight win on the MJT circuit. He claimed the highlight of the tournament for him was ‘coming back from a seven stroke deficit’ and has set his golf goals for this season to include “making the cut at the Manitoba Junior and to make the qualifier at the Manitoba Amateur.’ Second place in this division was taken by Brendan Baldwin, 13, of St. Adolphe, MB, who posted scores of 86-89 (175). Third place proved to be a great battle ending in a tie at 177 total score between Connor Shaw, 12, of Thompson, MB, and Peter Takis, 13, of Winnipeg.

Jenna Roadley, 14, of Winnipeg, came out four strokes ahead of the field on day one with an 84, improving on that score on day two with an 81 to take the top spot in the Girl’s division with her 165 total score. “This means my hard work is paying off,” said Roadley of her win. Ashley Fredette, 17, also of Winnipeg, finished second with scores of 91-79 (170) while Chelsea Hummelt, 17, of East Selkirk, MB, placed third (88-92=180).

The Mr. Lube Long Drive competition divisional winners were Graeme Wieler, 18, of Steinbach, MB, Kevin Hicks, 16, of Winnipeg, Landon Kopp, 13, of Lorette, MB, and Jessie Choi, 16, of Winnipeg. Winners of each division’s Sundog Skills Competition were Edward Markham, 17, of Beausejour, MB, Bryce Barr, 16, of Winnipeg, Brendan Baldwin and Amy Cerasani, 15, of Winnipeg.
