WARREN, MB: The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s double qualifier on Father’s Day weekend at the South Interlake Golf and Country Club in Warren, MB, proved to be another weekend of outstanding golf in decent weather conditions with players vying for spots on MJT Team Canada to both the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Matches in St. Andrews, U.K. and to the International Junior Golf Invitational (IJGI) in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
Brock Helgeson, 17 of Balmertown, ON, came out to win this tournament showing tremendous focus throughout both days. Helgeson finished day one with a leading score of 76 thanks to a 30 foot putt on hole 16 for eagle, and then blew away the competition on day two with a “take no prisoners” score of 70, placing him four strokes ahead of the entire field with the Boys 17 and up title, overall low score in the tournament, and a spot on the team to Scotland. “Playing on the MJT gives me the experience I need and helps me get used to the pressure,” said Helgeson, who clearly demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure in Warren this weekend. Finishing second in the Boys 17 and up category was Burke Wiebe, 17, of Winnipeg, MB, with scores of 77-76 (153), while third place went to Daniel Moar, 17, of Portage la Prairie, MB (78-76=154).
