MacGillivary and Chelle top qualifiers at MJT’s Stony Plain Stop

STONY PLAIN, AB – After two false starts in April due to the unexpected snow, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) first multi-day tournament of the season in Alberta was held at Stony Plain Golf Club in Stony Plain, AB, on May 10th and 11th. The tournament was a double qualifier for two major international events - the International Junior Golf Invitational in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and the CKG Tour World Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA.

The course was in excellent shape for the two-day tournament and the strong field of junior golfers from far and wide enjoyed decent weather both days except for a light shower and some wind.

Despite being very sick with flu-like symptoms, local Brett MacGillivary, 17, of Stony Plain, held off Craig Bloom, 17, of Calgary, with steady rounds of 74-74 (148) to win low overall, the Boys 17 and up division title, and a spot on MJT Team Canada to Mexico. “This is my first MJT win, it means quite a bit,” said MacGillvary, who has been playing the Tour for the past four seasons. “Playing MJT helps my game with multi-day tournaments and good players and my goal is to play well in all events and make nationals.” Bloom shot 75-75 (150) to finish second in the division, always looking back at Chase Teron, 18, of Red Deer, who shot 77-77=154 for third place.

Also in the Boys 17 and up division, Edmontonians Jace Barros, 18, and Patrick Sloan, 17, playing in the same group, both holed their second shots from off the green on the par 4, 305 yard 6th hole for eagles!

Competitive action in the Boys 14-16 division saw new Tour player Cole Chelle, 15, of Edmonton, hold off all comers with scores of 73-76 (149) to win the title and an exemption into the CKG Tour World Championship in South Carolina. “It was fun playing with people I knew – it means a lot to win with the good players in the field and gives me great confidence going into the year!” he said. Tied for second spot behind Chelle at 152 total score was Taylor Irvin, 16, of Cochrane (74-78) and Cody Stout, 16, of Red Deer (73-79). This division’s tight group let a few slip away coming down the stretch.

Kylie Barros, 16, of the Edmonton and the Edmonton Petroleum Club, played steady golf with rounds of 78-79 (157) to capture the Girls division title. Barros, who joined the Tour back in 2001 when she was just 9 years old, is expecting to play more golf this year so was very excited to see it start this way. “It was a lot of fun, I really enjoyed the girls I played with. This win shows I am capable of reaching goals and shows I have a future in golf.” Evann Parker, 16, of Calgary was steady as well but her short game was not quite what she needed and she settled for second place with scores of 80-87 (167). Finishing third was Christie Lin, 14, of Calgary, who hit many great shots all weekend (85-88=173) and is off to a great start in 2008.

Jesse Teron, 13, of Red Deer, following in his older brother Chase's footsteps, started the season out with a great win in the Boys 13 and under group which included a field of first-time MJT players. He recorded an opening round score of 76 after being +4 after 5 holes. Solid ball striking and a well-rounded short game kept him at the top to finish at 76-81=157. “Shooting 76 after being plus four was my highlight,” he said. “Playing MJT helps me get used to the competition and this win gives me confidence for upcoming tournaments.” Placing second in the division was Mikkel Holt, 13, of Athabasca, who played hard and steady throughout the event (86-82=168). Zachery Pardiac, 13, of Lethbridge, also had a great start for third place (91-94=185).

As qualifying continues for various age categories for the South Carolina event and spots on MJT Team Canada to Mexico, more finalists for exemptions will be shortlisted from both this tournament and others on the MJT schedule.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Jesse Teron, Tyson Beaupre, 16, of Grande Prairie, Craig Bloom and Emily Miles, 17, of Edmonton. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Keaton Holick, 12, of High River, Cole Chelle, Will Parker, 18, of Edmonton, and Kylie Barros.

The MJT continues its Alberta schedule next weekend on May 17th and 18th at Lacombe Golf Club in Lacombe – an event which honours the memory of former MJT member and Lacombe event champion Brandt Levers of Breton. The Lacombe stop is a qualifier for MJT Team Canada to the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Junior Team Matches in St. Andrews, Scotland, UK, in August.
