MacGillivary and Chelle top qualifiers at MJT’s Stony Plain Stop

STONY PLAIN, AB – After two false starts in April due to the unexpected snow, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) first multi-day tournament of the season in Alberta was held at Stony Plain Golf Club in Stony Plain, AB, on May 10th and 11th. The tournament was a double qualifier for two major international events - the International Junior Golf Invitational in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and the CKG Tour World Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA.

The course was in excellent shape for the two-day tournament and the strong field of junior golfers from far and wide enjoyed decent weather both days except for a light shower and some wind.

Despite being very sick with flu-like symptoms, local Brett MacGillivary, 17, of Stony Plain, held off Craig Bloom, 17, of Calgary, with steady rounds of 74-74 (148) to win low overall, the Boys 17 and up division title, and a spot on MJT Team Canada to Mexico. “This is my first MJT win, it means quite a bit,” said MacGillvary, who has been playing the Tour for the past four seasons. “Playing MJT helps my game with multi-day tournaments and good players and my goal is to play well in all events and make nationals.” Bloom shot 75-75 (150) to finish second in the division, always looking back at Chase Teron, 18, of Red Deer, who shot 77-77=154 for third place.

Also in the Boys 17 and up division, Edmontonians Jace Barros, 18, and Patrick Sloan, 17, playing in the same group, both holed their second shots from off the green on the par 4, 305 yard 6th hole for eagles!
