12-year-old Chen Posts Even Par on MJT at Osprey
Horvath Qualifies for Texas

ALTON, ON – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s only national junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals, held a two-day tournament at Osprey Valley Golf Resort in Alton on June 9th and 10th, which was also a qualifier for the Texas Junior Masters at Colovista Country Club in Bastrop, TX, this July.

Wade Chen, 12, of Toronto, fired rounds of 74-70 off the white tees for a total score of even-par 144, running away with the Boys 13 and under division title. “Coming down the stretch I was thinking, if I shoot something less than what I shot yesterday (+2), it would be very hard for the others to catch up,” said Chen, who cited his key to victory as consistency and accuracy. Tied for second place in the division were Matthew Speyer, 13, of Cambridge and a Galt Country Club junior, and Ryan Borg, 12, of Mississauga, both of whom shot back-to-back rounds of 75.

Low overall off the back tees was Stratford Country Club’s Brett Nymeyer, 18, of Stratford, who edged Travis Horvath, 17, of Tillsonburg and Tillsonburg Golf Club by one stroke for the Boys 17 and up champion’s trophy. Nymeyer, who shot 75-70 (145), said his highlight was going birdie-birdie on the last two holes to win. “I knew I had won when Travis missed the 5-footer on 18,” he added. Runner-up Horvath fired 72-74 (146) and met the eligibility criteria for a spot on MJT Team Canada to Texas. The rest of the nine-player team is qualifying at other MJT tournaments across the country. Third place in the division was claimed by Galt Country Club junior, Bryan Germann, 18, of Kitchener, who posted scores of 73-76 (149).

The Boys 14-16 division champion was Whistle Bear Golf Club’s Brent McKenzie, 15, of Cambridge, who continued his winning ways on the MJT by firing rounds of 74-72 (146) to edge runner-up Brian Churchill-Smith, 16, of Oakville. “Early in the second round my ball striking was poor, but my ability to grind it out was key to winning, and I made my three foot putt on the final hole to win by one,” said McKenzie. Runner-up Churchill-Smith, who plays out of Toronto Golf Club, shot 76-71 (147) while third place finisher, David Mathers, 16, of Kitchener and Westmount Golf Club, shot 71-78 (149).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Emerson Bianchi of Woodbridge and a member of the National Golf Club, Brendan Leonard of Cambridge and Whistle Bear Golf Club, and Bryan Germann. The Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competition divisional winners were John Nalbandian of Brampton and a member of Castlemore Golf Club, Brent McKenzie and Brett Nymeyer.

The MJT continues its Ontario schedule on June 30th and July 1st with the 5th annual MJT-Ontario PGA Junior Championship at Forest City National Golf Club in London – a qualifier for the China Junior Open in 2008.
