Mulder Wins Low Overall at MJT Cattermole Timber Classic
Hyun Wins Team Spot to Texas

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – Local players dominated most age divisions in the opening round of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) stop sponsored by Cattermole Timber at Ledgeview Golf Club in Abbotsford, B.C., this past weekend. Only one, however, held out to claim overall victory in their division. Ian Mulder, 18, of Abbotsford, fired 73-71 (144) to win among Boys 17 and up, and also take low overall honours in the tournament, which ran May 26th and 27th.

“Coming down the stretch I thought I must stay confident by knowing I have the ability to win and persevere,” said Mulder, who cited his tournament highlight as draining a 15-footer on hole 11 from the fringe for a birdie. Mulder shot a three-under-par 31 on the back nine to hold off Mike Broadfoot, 17, also of Abbotsford, who shot 73-76 (149) to place second in the division. Harrison Taylor, 17, of Langley, B.C., came in third with scores of 78-75 (153).

Justin Hyun, 15, of Burnaby, B.C., fired 77-74 (151) to edge both John Lee and Spencer Lightburn by one stroke in the Boys 14-16 division. Lee, 16, of Port Coquitlam, B.C. (75-77), and Lightburn, 16, of Abbotsford (75-77), tied for second place in the division at 152. “The key to my victory was my putting,” said Hyun, who qualified for boys aged 15 on MJT Team Canada to the Texas Junior Masters at Colovista Golf Club in Bastrop, Texas, this July. “I was pretty nervous coming down the stretch because this was my first MJT of the season. Spencer was making a charge, so I just concentrated on the shot that presented to me at the moment. I really didn’t know that I had won until the last putt dropped.” The rest of the nine-player team to Texas is qualifying at other MJT tournaments across Canada.

In the Boys 13 and under division, Kevin Kwon and Tyler Salsbury repeated their last match-up on the MJT with 12-year-old Kwon of Coquitlam posting excellent scores of 72-75 for a 147 total, beating runner-up Salsbury, 13, of Enumclaw, WA, by two strokes. “I was thinking I had a chance to win but I was not sure,” said Kwon. “My accurate iron shots and putting saves were key.” Third place was claimed by Kevin Lee, 12, of Surrey, B.C. who shot 74-78 (152).

An even-par final round of 71 in the Girls division won the title by a substantial margin for Soo Bin Kim, 13, of Port Coquitlam. Kim shot 77-71 (148). “I had two birdies in a row which gave me so much confidence. All I cared about was making a new best score,” she said. Second place went to Jisoo Keel, 11, of Coquitlam (80-78=158), while Anica Yoo, 13, of Port Coquitlam, placed third (84-78=162).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Danny Yu, 13, of Surrey, Nigel Sinnott, 16, of Rosedale, B.C., Harrison Taylor, and Anica Yoo. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Tyler Salsbury, Pureum Lee, 15, of North Vancouver, B.C., Harrison Taylor and Jisoo Keel.

The MJT continues its British Columbia schedule on June 23rd and 24th at King’s Links Golf Club (formerly the Links at Boundary Bay) in Delta. This tournament is also a qualifier for the 3rd annual CAN/USA Team Matches at ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Arizona.
