FAWCETT WINS SPOT TO ARIZONA AT MJT ST. BONIFACE STOP
$2000 Holes-in-One Also Highlights Tournament

WINNIPEG, MB – The second stop in Manitoba on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) was held at St. Boniface Golf Course in Winnipeg on July 3rd and 4th - a double qualifier for two international events. Players from all over Manitoba and parts of Ontario competed for spots in the CAN/USA Team Matches at ASU Karsten Golf Club in Tempe, AZ, this December, and into the Canada-International Friendship Cup at Beach Grove Golf Club in Delta, B.C., this August.

Hot weather greeted the players, as well as a golf course in great shape, and the scores were a little higher than usual due to some tough pins and very fast greens. A highlight of the tournament was the acing of two holes-in-one during the first round - by Myles Sullivan, 14, of Portage le Prairie, MB, on the 5th hole, and Edward (Teddy) Markham, 16, of Beausejour, MB, on the 14th hole. Each of these juniors will receive a $1,000 R.E.S.P. from MJT sponsor ‘Fire at the Flag’, a company which gives this generous educational assistance to any junior golfer who scores a hole-in-one at any MJT event across the country.

In the Boys 14-16 division, Steve Minion, 15, of Winnipeg, and Kody Fawcett, 16, of Clandeboye, MB, were tied for the lead going into the final hole with Burke Wiebe, 16, of Winnipeg, just one shot back. Wiebe made a four, Minion could not make the up and down for three and had to settle for a four, but Fawcett was steady by hitting the green and two-putting for the low overall score and the Boys 14-16 division title. Final scores for the top three finishers were 71-80 (151) for Wiebe, 75-75 (150) for Minion, and 75-74 (149) for Fawcett. Minion earns a spot in the Canada-International Friendship Cup and Fawcett now adds a trip to Arizona to his resume after qualifying for MJT Team Canada to the International Junior Golf Invitational in Mexico at a previous MJT event.

Matt Loewen, 18, of Winkler, MB, won his second MJT Boys 17 and up division title in a row after firing rounds of 75-82 (157). Runner-up in this division was Eric Bench, 17, of Winnipeg, who shot 78-81 (159), while Peter Moon, 17, of also of Winnipeg, placed third (82-78=160).

In the Boys 13 and under division, Brenden Setter, 12, of Selkirk, MB, a newcomer to the MJT, won his first tournament after playing consistent golf and scoring 85-86 (171). Runner-up was Ryley Pace, 13, of Red Lake, ON, who shot 90-88 (178). Bret Thompson, 13, of Winnipeg, enjoyed both his first MJT event and home course advantage and placed third with scores of 96-85 (181).

13-year-old Jenna Roadley, of Winnipeg, won her first MJT tournament title after shooting 93-90 for a 183 total score, beating runner-up Chelsea Hummelt, 16, of East Selkirk, MB, by five strokes. Hummelt shot 93-95. Kayla Ketcheson, 16, of St. Andrews, MB, placed third among the Girls with scores of 100-93 (193).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were all from Winnipeg - Garrett Neiles, 14, Peter Moon, Chris Kim, 13, and Jessie Choi, 15. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Joe Ftoma, 15, of Winnipeg, Eric Bench, Brenden Setter and Jenna Roadley.

The final MJT stop in Manitoba this season is the MJT-PGA Manitoba Junior Championship presented by Bieber Securities at Transcona Golf Club in Winnipeg, July 22nd and 23rd. The tournament is also a qualifier for the 2008 China Junior Open. For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
