Thompson Fires Six-Under Par for MJT Victory

SASKATOON, SK – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) opened its 2007 Saskatchewan season at Moon Lake Golf Club in Saskatoon on May 5th and 6th, with a triple qualifier for three major international events. Players from British Columbia, Alberta and all over Saskatchewan competed for spots on MJT Team Canada to the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Junior Team Matches in the U.K., and on MJT Team Canada to the International Junior Golf Invitational (IJGI) in Cuernavaca, Mexico, as well as in the World Youth Team Challenge at Bolingbrook Golf Club in Illinois, USA.

Scott Thompson, 18, of St. Walburg, SK, blitzed his way to overall victory and Boys 17 and up division title with a six-under-par total score of 138 (68-70). “It’s my last junior golf season and winning is important,” said Thompson. Jeff Chambers, Canadian PGA Professional and MJT Tournament Director, added, “He is just so incredibly solid. I was pleased to see both Scott and Tim (Acaster) do so well as I have worked with them for four years.” Acaster, 18, of North Battleford, SK, fired 69-73 (142) to finish at two-under-par, placing as runner-up to Thompson. Both players received spots on MJT Team Canada, with Thompson selecting Scotland under Team Coach Chambers. Acaster, who won a place on the Team to Scotland last year, will now have the opportunity to compete in Mexico, where MJT Team Canada has won the IJGI for the past two years over teams from Mexico, U.S.A. and Guatemala.

Third place in the Boys 17 and up division went to Thomas Weikle, 18, of Cut Knife, SK, who shot 70-77 (147), while Taylor Smith, 17, of Swift Current (76-73), and Mitchell Zaba, 18, of Deer Valley, SK (73-76), finished tied for fourth at 149 total score.

The long trip to Saskatchewan was worth it for Morgan Leigh, 16, of Surrey, B.C., who won the Boys 14-16 division after firing 73-70 (143). “The condition of the golf course was the highlight for me,” he said. “I want to play well in the B.C. Juniors - this win feels good and helps with my confidence.” Albertan Evan Cowan, 14, of Coaldale, shot 74-73 (147) to tie for second place in the division with Dallas Mengel, 15, of Saskatoon (72-75=147).

Kyla Reay, 18, of Saskatoon, cited her eagle on the second hole on the Moors course as her tournament highlight en route to victory in the Girls division. “It’s my last junior year and I want to make it count,” said Reay, who posted scores of 74-85 (159) to run away with the title over second place finisher Crystal Weiss, 18, of White City, SK (91-83=174). Third place went to Kelsey Klatt, 15, of Fort Qu’Appelle, SK (89-92=181).

Tyler Puetz, 13, of Melfort, SK, shot 83-90 (173) to win the Boys 13 and under division by three strokes over Taylor Cook, 13, of North Battleford (93-83=176). Third spot was claimed by Conley Kreigler, 12, of Saskatoon, who scored 88-89 (177).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Zach Taylor, 12, of Saskatoon, Troy Bulmer, 16, of Saskatoon, Chad Lavallee, 17, of Meadow Lake, SK, and Crystal Weiss. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Nathan Corrin, 10, of Moose Jaw, SK, Garrett Leedahl, 15, of Saskatoon, Scott Thompson, and Anna Young, 13, of Saskatoon.

The finalist for exemption into the World Youth Team Challenge in Illinois was shortlisted to Anna Young, for girls aged 13-14. Young carded 100 on day one, which included a 14 on one hole, and bounced back with 88 on day two.
