TWO MORE FOR TEXAS AFTER MJT-ONTARIO PGA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

LONDON, ON – A major event on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), endorsed by the Ontario Professional Golfers’ Association (OPGA), played out Sunday and Monday, July 30th and 31st, on Forest City National Golf Course in London, ON. The 36-hole tournament, the MJT-Ontario PGA Junior Championship, is part of a series of national events pioneered by the MJT in conjunction with the provincial CPGA zones. Junior golfers from all over Ontario took part, with the low overall scorers among both the boys and girls receiving exemptions into the North American Junior Championship in New Braunfels, Texas, this December.

Meg Pototshnik, 15, of Stratford and Sunningdale Golf and Country Club, fired the low overall score for the field (76-75=151), winning her division and the girl’s spot on Maple Leaf Team Canada to Texas. A three-stroke victory claimed the boy’s exemption for Travis Horvath, 16, of Tillsonburg and Tillsonburg Golf Club, who fired 73-80 for a 36-hole total of 153, also scooping the MJT-Ontario PGA Junior Boys 14-16 champion’s trophy. Pototshnik and Horvath will join the team of six boys and two girls; the other members are currently qualifying at MJT events across the country.

Runner-up to Horvath in the Boys 14-16 division was Justin DaSilva, 16, of Cambridge, who shot 76-81 (157). One stroke back in third place with back-to-back scores of 79 (158 total) was Jordan Roemer, 16, of Cobourg.

After a close race, Johnny Hall, 17, of Langton and Delhi Golf and Country Club, was the MJT-Ontario PGA Junior Boys 17 and up champion, posting scores of 75-81 for a 156 total score. Ben McFaul, 18, of Ancaster and Dundas Valley Golf Club (80-77) and Kyle Demeester, 18, another Langton resident and Delhi Golf Club junior, tied for second place in the division behind Hall at 157 total score.

MJT-Ontario PGA Junior Boys 13 and under champion was Brad Burgess, 13, of Caistor Centre and Southbrook Golf and Country Club, who shot 81-79 (160). Second place in this division went to Gajan Sivabalasingham, 12, of Markham and a Mandarin Golf Club junior, who posted scores of 87-76 (163). Third spot among boys aged 13 and under was claimed by Truman Tai, 12, a Deer Creek Golf Club junior who also hails from Markham (91-82=173).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Brad Burgess, Jaimie Trotman, 16, of Port Elgin, Matt Burkhart, 17, of Kitchener, and Meg Pototshnik. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Javier Diaz, 13, of Woodbridge, Mike Ciccale, 16, of Niagara Falls, Marko Zupet, 18, of Burlington, and Kathryn Corbiere, 17, of M’Chigeeng.

The MJT Ontario schedule continues on August 14th through 16th with a 54-hole tournament at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge, the final qualifier before the MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship in Whistler, British Columbia, August 28th and 29th.
