Future of College Golf in Good Hands at MJT’s Mayfair Event

RICHMOND, B.C. –This weekend’s Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Canadian University Coaches Classic event at Mayfair Lakes Golf Club in Richmond, B.C., went down to the wire with close finishes in most of the divisions. A full field of future college hopefuls competed in tough conditions, with wind and rain on Saturday. On Sunday, the weather improved later in the afternoon, giving the juniors a bit of a break.

Two of the three boy’s division winners were decided by countbacks on the demanding golf course. The overall leaders and Boys 17 and up division top finishers, Cole Roblin (19), of The Harvest Golf Club in Kelowna, and Brett Webster (17), of Ledgeview Golf Course in Abbotsford, battled the course and the weather for 36 holes and ended up tied at 144. Webster had held the first round lead with a one-under-par 70 in difficult conditions, and closed with a 74. Roblin, who shot 71-73 and thus took home his first MJT victory by means of a countback, believed “staying in the moment, staying aggressive and not worrying about what the other players were doing”, was the difference between winning and not winning. “I performed under pressure playing against some great players,” he added. Seon Kim (18), of Hazelmere Golf Course and a Surrey resident, was a close third place, narrowly missing the winners’ circle by one shot (73-72=145).

Sue Kim (15), of Langley, a Redwoods junior member, scooped another MJT title with solid rounds of 74-77 (151). With this result, Sue has been dominating the Girls division this season. Finishing second was 16-year-old Kristina Gargaro of Port Moody and Meadow Gardens Golf Club, who shot rounds of 78-77 (155), finishing four strokes back of the winner. Chelsea Kim (16) of Coquitlam, finished third with rounds of 79-78 (157).

In the Boys 14-16 division, Thomas Petts (16), of North Vancouver, and Dong Su (16) of Richmond, tied for first place with scores of 76-70 (146) and 74-72 (146) respectively. Petts, who plays out of Marine Drive Golf Club, came back in round two to take the trophy on a countback with his low round of the day. “Staying patient in the tough weather conditions was a factor in my win today,” said Petts. Dong Su, whose home course is Mayfair Lakes, had the tournament highlight after putting in for an eagle on the Par 4 16th hole. Su was fresh off a European Tour event two weeks ago in China, and is headed this week for an AJGA event in Texas, USA. Vancouver Golf Club member Nick McKnight (16) of North Vancouver had another solid tournament, finishing third in the division with scores of 75-72 (147).

In the Boys 13 and under division, Coquitlam resident Andy Yang (13) of Meadow Gardens Golf Club, won for the second time this year after coming back from a disappointing 80 in round one. After a second day 71, the second lowest round of the day, Yang was able to pull out the victory by one shot over Adam Svensson (12) of Marine Drive. “The greens were really fast even though it was raining,” said Yang. “I am really happy to win and hope I can keep this up!” Svensson of Surrey had another top finish shooting solid rounds of 77-75 (152). Kevin Lee (11) of Surrey, BC, finished third with rounds of 81-74 (155).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Andy Yang, Dong Su, Zach MacDougall (17) of Coquitlam, and Kyla Inaba (20) of UBC. The Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition divisional winners were Mike Broadfoot (16) of Abbotsford, Ryan Lloyd (17) of Maple Ridge, and Sue Kim.

The University of BC Head Coach, Chris MacDonald, and the UBC Strength & Conditioning Coach, Jason Glass, gave a talk to all the players after the tournament. Encouraging words and advice in how to succeed at the university level was the main focus of the discussion. Fitness is a large part of the golf game and the younger these golfers begin their fitness programs the more likely they will be in having a successful golfing career.
