Future of College Golf in Good Hands at MJT’s Mayfair Event

RICHMOND, B.C. – This weekend’s Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Canadian University Coaches Classic event at Mayfair Lakes Golf Club in Richmond, B.C., went down to the wire with close finishes in most of the divisions. A full field of future college hopefuls competed in tough conditions, with wind and rain on Saturday. On Sunday, the weather improved later in the afternoon, giving the juniors a bit of a break.

Two of the three boy’s division winners were decided by countbacks on the demanding golf course. The overall leaders and Boys 17 and up division top finishers, Cole Roblin (19), of The Harvest Golf Club in Kelowna, and Brett Webster (17), of Ledgeview Golf Course in Abbotsford, battled the course and the weather for 36 holes and ended up tied at 144. Webster had held the first round lead with a one-under-par 70 in difficult conditions, and closed with a 74. Roblin, who shot 71-73 and thus took home his first MJT victory by means of a countback, believed “staying in the moment, staying aggressive and not worrying about what the other players were doing”, was the difference between winning and not winning. “I performed under pressure playing against some great players,” he added. Seon Kim (18), of Hazelmere Golf Course and a Surrey resident, was a close third place, narrowly missing the winners’ circle by one shot (73-72=145).
