BROTHER-SISTER DUO DOMINATE MAPLE LEAF JUNIOR TOUR STOP IN STONY PLAIN

STONY PLAIN, AB ? The Boston Pizza-sponsored Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour event at Stony Plain Golf Club this past week was dominated by the brother and sister duo from Edmonton, Steven Her and Susan Nam.

Her and Nam, both of whom have played on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) for a few years now, won their respective divisions of Boys 14-16 and Girls, and shot the low overall tournament scores.

Nam opened with a three-under-par 69 to blow away the rest of the girls field on the well conditioned Stony Plain golf course. ?On a golf course like that she destroyed everybody,? said CPGA Professional Trent Matson, MJT Tournament Director.

A closing round of 73 for a two-under-par total of 142 left a wide margin for Nam, who rated the course in great shape with fast greens. ?My attitude helped me win ? I was very positive and enjoyed the event ? I smiled off all the bogeys,? she said, adding that victories, of which she has racked up a number in junior golf, are ?always good.?

Finishing second was Mackenzie Renner from Coaldale (81-82=163), with Kelly Amundrud from Calgary in third (92-91=183). Fourth place went to Anisha Chong from Lethbridge (88-96=184).

Nam?s younger brother, Her, who earlier this month was part of the MJT?s Canadian contingent in the International Junior Golf Team Matches in Mexico, recorded back-to-back scores of 72 for an even par total of 144 in the two day tournament.

?I was successful because of excellent putting ? I made lots of birdies,? said Her. ?It is the first time I have had the low score overall,? he added.

Runner up in the Boys 14-16 division was Gary Helgason from Edmonton (79-78=157), followed by Cody Adolph from Stony Plain in third place (78-80=158).

In the Boys 17 and up division Coogan Mitchell from St. Albert, playing his last event as a junior, edged Tyler Gough from Westbank, BC, by one stroke to win. Mitchell shot rounds of 78-77=155 and attributed his victory to solid iron shots and some good breaks. ?It?s been a while since I won last so it feels good,? he said.

Gough shot 76-80=156 to claim second place ahead of Carter Lee from Sherwood Park (83-74=157) and Kyle Morrison from Red Deer (79-79=158).

Neil Pulongbarit from Edmonton won his third Boys 13 and under division title on the MJT this season with scores of 72-75=147. ?I kept my driver in play and limited my mistakes,? he said, noting that the course was in good shape and very challenging.

Runner up in the division was Jason McKinlay from Consort (76-83=159), followed by two young players from Grande Prairie, Nolan Trudeau (86-81=167) and Michael Taylor (88-80=168).

Division winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition during the tournament were Pulongbarit, Her, Mitchell and Chong.

The Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competition division winners were Pulongbarit, Adolph, Mitchell and Nam.

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, formerly the Western Canada Junior Tour, hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions across Canada and is endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart. It is the only major junior tour in Canada run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals. The final regular season MJT event in Alberta is the third annual Alberta PGA Junior Championship presented by Mazda at Redwood Meadows Golf Club in Calgary, August 30-September 1.
