TOURNAMENT RECORD OF 14-UNDER-PAR FOR MJT- BC PGA JUNIOR CHAMPION

CLOVERDALE, BC – The third and final round of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s fourth annual BC PGA Junior Championship concluded yesterday on the superbly conditioned Northview Golf Club in Cloverdale, BC, where 108 young golfers from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC competed.

After 36 holes on the Canal Course the field was cut to the top 57 players for the final round on the Ridge Course, home for seven years to the PGA Tour’s Air Canada Championship.

Maple Leaf Team Canada member Devin Carrey, 18, of South Surrey, posted a phenomenal tournament record score of 14-under-par to win the low overall Champion’s Vase from the BC PGA as well as the Boys 17 and up division title.

Carrey fired rounds of 66-70-66 for a 202 total score to beat runner-up and fellow Team member Seon Kim by six strokes. “Seon is a great player – it came down to making putts down the stretch. We’ll make a good team in Mexico,” said Carrey. “To win this championship is a great way to end the season and head into university next year at Missouri State,” he added.

Kim, 17, of Surrey, shot 65-71-72 to close at 8-under-par, edging Lucas Bogdan, 17, of Abbotsford, by just one stroke after Bogdan blitzed the Ridge course with a final round of 65. Fourth spot went to Nathan Leonhardt, 20, of Richmond (72-68-72=212), who is en route to play college golf in Texas.

The MJT-BC PGA Boys 14-16 Junior Champion was Jonnie Motomochi, 14, of White Rock, who fired 72-70-68 to post a 6-under-par total score of 210, beating Sean Jarvis, 16, of Vancouver, by two strokes. Jarvis and Motomochi were tied for the lead in this division after two rounds.

“I was just trying to make pars out there and was 3-up after two, but Sean kept making birdies,” said Motomochi. “Then he was 5-under-par on the last 16 holes and I was 4-under the last 16. We were both paying really well. I’ve been struggling so far this year so it feels really good to win, especially as there were lots of players and on these Sunday pins – I hit the ball so good, hit 11 fairways and didn’t miss many greens.”

Jarvis fired 72-70-70 (212) to finish second. Ian Mulder, 16, of Abbotsford, shot 71-76-73 (220) to place third, and Ted Cho, 16, of Surrey, posted scores of 75-70-76 (221) to finish fourth.

Another Maple Leaf Team Canada member, Brian Cho, 12, of Pitt Meadows, was crowned the MJT-BC PGA Junior Boys 13 and under Champion after shooting 72-70-69 for a 211 total score, beating runner-up Bryan Lichimo, 13, of North Vancouver, by eight strokes.

“I think I won because I practiced a lot,” said Cho. “When I was at the 11th I was tied with Bryan, so I concentrated a lot and made 5 birdies. This is a present for my teacher before I go back to the U.S.A.”

Lichimo recorded scores of 77-68-74 (219), edging Andy Yang, 12, of Port Moody, who shot 72-74-75 (221) to place third. Adam Svensson, 11, of Surrey and Tom Xue, 13, of Richmond, tied for fourth with total scores of 227.

11-year-old Anica Yoo of Port Coquitlam put together three outstanding rounds of 79-74-83 for a 236 total to win the MJT-BC PGA Junior Girls Champion title. “The course was great. My strategy was to do my routine – if I do a bad shot I have to forget about it and I tried to do two or one putts. I think I won because I tried my best and I tried to be in first.”

Second place to Anica was another 11-year-old, Jennifer Yang of Port Moody, who scored 84-87-84 for a 255 total. Young Soo (Emily) Kim of Port Coquitlam placed third with rounds of 87-82-87 (256).
The division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Tom Xue, Sean O’Connor (Vancouver), Jeff Stashuk (Coquitlam) and Anico Yoo. The Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Brian Cho, Ryan Lloyd (Maple Ridge), Jessie Singh (Surrey) and Emily Kim.
Some of the country’s top juniors have taken part in the MJT, such as Inah Park, the reigning Canadian junior girls’ champion, and Darren Wallace, the Canadian Men’s Amateur Champion. Seven out of the Top 10 RCGA nationally-ranked juniors in 2004 have played on the Tour, which is presented by Boston Pizza nationally and endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart.

The MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship wraps the regular season on September 10-11 at Banff Springs Golf Club in Banff, Alberta. For more information please call 1-877-859-GOLF or visit the Tour’s website at www.maplejt.com.
