FUTURE LINKS CHAMPION POSTS LOW OVERALL SCORE AS THE MJT STOPS IN POINT ROBERTS

Point Roberts, WA ? The superbly conditioned Point Roberts Golf and Country Club in Point Roberts, WA, proved a stern test for juniors on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) this past Father?s Day weekend.

Current Future Links Pacific Champion Nick Taylor, 17, of Abbotsford, BC, was not to be outdone by the slick greens and tight fairways, however, and posted solid rounds of 72-73 (145) to win the Boys 17 and up division title in the MJT Border Championship event.

Taylor credited his success and third win on the MJT this season to the good coaching from his coach, Sean Richardson. ?It feels great that I pulled it off,? he said. ?Brendan Peters played very well and I had to make some putts in the end.?

Peters, 18, of Maple Ridge, battled it out all the way with Taylor, shooting 73-73 (146) to place second one stroke back. Third place was taken by Nathan Leonhardt, 20, of Richmond, who started out blazing on the second day with a four?under 32 on the front nine. The Point Roberts course then showed its teeth and Leonhardt closed with a 75 and 151 total score. One stroke back in fourth spot was Jeff Stashuk, 18, of Coquitlam, who posted scores of 74-78 (152).

The Boys 14-16 division title was captured in fine style by Kyle Dodman, 14, of Abbotsford, who held on to his first round lead and fired rounds of 74-82 (156) to beat runner-up Shaymus Hearn, 16, of Langley, by two strokes.

?I really focused on hitting the ball straight and just keeping it in play,? said Dodman. ?I knew I had won only when I got to the scoring table and everyone congratulated me. This is my second win this year and it is awesome.?

Hearn shot 78-80 (158) while third place finisher, Eliot Raibl, 16, of Vancouver, shot 80-81 (161). Ryan Lloyd, 16, of Maple Ridge, placed fourth with scores of 86-79 (165).

In the Boys 13 and under division, James Fahy, 13, of Vancouver, nailed a 20 foot putt on the last hole to beat Adam Svensson, 11, of Surrey, by one shot. ?Adam was closing on me until the last hole when I made a par,? said Fahy, who shot 76-81 (157).

Svensson shot back-to-back rounds of 79 for a 158 total score. Third place in the division was claimed by Bryan Lichimo, 13, of North Vancouver, with scores of 82-81 (163), followed by Mason Pimentel, 11, of Richmond, in fourth place (79-86=165).

Sue Kim, 14, of Langley, fired great rounds of 76-78 (154) to win the Girls division over Maple Leaf Team member Kristina Gargaro, 16, of Port Moody.

?The greens were fast so I had to get the weight right, and I had to play low when the wind was in my face,? said Kim, who qualified for July?s Callaway Golf Junior World Championships in San Diego, California, during an earlier MJT tournament.

Each champion also won their division?s Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions. In the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition, the division winners were Fahy, Mike Broadfoot, 15, of Abbotsford, and Jeff Stashuk.

The next local tournament on the non?profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, which is Canada?s only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals, is the MJT Cattermole Timber Classic at Belmont Golf Club in Langley, June 25-26.
