MAPLE LEAF JUNIOR GOLF TOUR TO SEND CANADIAN CONTINGENT
TO INTERNATIONAL MATCH PLAY IN MEXICO

Vancouver, B.C. ? The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) held its first qualifier for the Canadian contingent in the third annual International Junior Golf Team Matches in Mexico this past weekend, at the Links at Boundary Bay Golf Course in Delta, B.C.

The competitive field in the two-day tournament, which was sponsored by Cattermole Timber, enjoyed a superbly conditioned golf course but faced challenging winds off the ocean at Boundary Bay. The event was to qualify at least one player aged 18 or under for a spot on the Maple Leaf Team to the International Junior Golf Team Matches at Los Colinas Golf Club in Cuernavaca, Mexico, this August.

19-year-old Marco Redavid from North Delta captured the Boys 17 and up division title and overall low score for the tournament with rounds of 73-76 for a 149 total score. ?Winning feels great ? it was my first win on the MJT,? said Redavid. ?I focused on keeping my misses to the right side of the hole and leaving myself the straightest putts in. It was tough to score well in the wind. Knowing that I stuck to my game plan and that it paid off boosts the confidence quite a bit.?

18-year-old Konrad Scheidacker from Surrey shot rounds of 75-79 for a 154 total score and second place finish, which earned him the first spot on the Maple Leaf Team to Mexico. The team of eight (six boys and two girls) will be announced after the final MJT qualifier on May 23-24 at Lionhead Golf Club in Ontario.

Reid McIntyre, also from Surrey, placed third in the division with a total score of 156, and fourth spot went to Hansol Koh from New Westminster, who had a 158 total score.

The Boys 14-16 division champion was Devin Carrey of Langley (78-77=155), who edged Christopher Cho of Kent, Washington State, by one stroke. ?The birdie on (hole) 18 to win felt great ? my hard work paid off,? said Carrey. ?It was a great field too.?

In third place behind Cho was Mitchell Lock of Mission (79-81=160), followed by Sean Jarvis from Vancouver in fourth spot (77-84=161).

Ken Chmela from Penticton successfully defended his Boys 13 and under title from last year and took top honours again with rounds of 80-75 for a 155 total. ?The course was in great condition and it was very windy ,? assessed Chmela, ?I think the keys to my victory were solid ball striking and a lot of ?up and downs?. It feels great to win.?

Surrey locals Brock Staller (77-80=157) and Morgan Leigh (78-81=159) placed second and third in the division respectively, with Conrado Paderes from Vancouver in fourth place (87-75=162).

Caroline Kim from Port Coquitlam also successfully defended her Girls division title by shooting scores of 75-77 for a 152 total. ?I feel really good because I won this tournament last year,? said Kim.

Two strokes back of Kim was runner-up Christine Cho from Kent, Washington State, who shot scores of 78-76 for a 154 total. Carla Ty of Richmond placed third with a total score of 159 while Carolyn Hope of South Delta broke 80 for the first time in competition and placed fourth (83-79=162).

Division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Kyle Dodman (Abbotsford), Francis Santiago (Lynwood, WA), Reid McIntyre and Nari Kim (South Surrey).

The Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition division winners were Michael McPhillips (South Delta), Reese Sterling (North Vancouver), Konrad Scheidacker and Lindsay Manion (Surrey).

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is presented by Boston Pizza across Canada and hosts tournaments for boys and girls ages 10 through 23 in four age divisions. The next local event is the MJT Fraser Valley Junior at Ledgeview Golf Club in Abbotsford, BC, May 29-30. For more information, please call 1-877-859-GOLF or visit www.maplejt.com.
