Selander secures top spot in MJT Saskatchewan stop

Prince Albert, SK – (August 27, 2012) – Torrential rain affected the MJT Saskatchewan Series at Elk Ridge Resort in Waskesiu, Saskatchewan, on August 25th and 26th, where two of the four divisions in the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) event managed to complete all 36 holes, competing for division titles plus the chance to qualify for the Future Collegiate World Tour’s (FCWT) PGA West event this December in La Quinta, CA, USA.

Cory Selander, 15, of Prince Albert, SK, fired 71-73 in difficult conditions to secure the Low Overall and the MJT Boys 14-16 title over Tyrin Foley, 16, of Bengough, SK (81-73), and Anthony Neufeld, 16, of Riverside Estates, SK (77-77), who both shot 154 and finished tied for second place. “Making an eagle from 100 yards in the rain was definitely the highlight and a huge reason for my victory,” said Selander, who receives the FCWT PGA West spot exemption. “The course was in incredible shape. It was unfortunate it had to rain because it was hard to enjoy. Coming down the stretch I was thinking that all I needed to do was make pars because I knew I had a large lead; it feels good (to win) because I have been in the top three in the prior tournaments and was finally able to win.”

Liam Courtney, 18, of Saskatoon, SK, carded great rounds of 73-72 (145) for a one shot victory in the Boys 17-19 division over Garrett Blair, 17, of Lanigan, SK, and Daegan Wall, 18, of Regina, SK, who both shot 73-73 and tied for second in a hard-fought race. “I knew there were two guys tied or close and I felt pressure on the last nine footer for birdie to win by one,” said Courtney. “Obviously with the weather it was tough but the course was in great condition. It is always a great feeling to win.”

Both the Girls and Boys 13 and under divisions were caught in the brunt of the storm, finishing only nine holes on the first day to compete in a weather–shortened 27 hole tournament. Brooke Hill, 16, of Regina, who carded 47-93 (140) to claim gold in the MJT Girls division, said, “I focused on taking it one shot at a time especially due to the bad weather. I just tried to keep hitting solid shots and not worrying about what the competition was doing.” She added, “It feels very good to win. This is the first time I’ve won an MJT tournament and I have been coming to them for a while.” Rounding out the top three among the Girls was Erykah Pool, 14, of Swift Current, SK, who shot 47-103 (150) to claim silver and Avery Wilson, 15, also of Swift Current, who shot 59-111 (170) for the bronze medal.

Noah Kozack, 13, of Regina, fired 39-71 (130) to coast to victory in the MJT Boys 13 and under division. “The highlight was playing such a great course and being able to score well in wet and soggy conditions,” he said, adding, “(The win) feels motivating!” Runner-up was Kristian Houk, 13, of North Battleford, SK, who shot 39-79, while third place went to Justin Bourassa, 13, of Regina, (41-80).

Mr. Lube Long Drive Awards went to Kristian Houk, Tyrin Foley, Liam Courtney and Brooke Hill, while Sundog Eyewear Skills Awards were taken home by Justin Bourassa, Cory Selander, Mitchell McPhail of La Ronge and Erykah Pool. Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Cole Jenkins of Prince Albert, Riley Grona of Coronach, Ben Leier of Saskatoon, and Avery Wilson.

This tournament was the final MJT stop in Saskatchewan this season; players now await invitations to the MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship presented by Callaway Golf at the Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix, Arizona, November 16-18, 2012, after qualifying via the MJT Cleveland Golf Order of Merit.
