Knapp Wins TPC Sawgrass event exemption on MJT at Osprey

Alton, ON – (August 20, 2012) – Two perfect days of warm, muggy weather and a well manicured golf course marked another successful event on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Ontario schedule on August 18th and 19th at the Osprey Valley Golf Club (Hoot Course) in Alton. The juniors were competing for titles in four age divisions and the chance to qualify for a spot into the Future Collegiate World Tour’s (FCWT) event at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Verde Beach, Florida, USA, this December.

Daniel Knapp, 16, of Burlington, ON, claimed the MJT Boys 14-16 gold medal after shooting 70-70, earning Low Overall Honours and the exemption into the FCWT TPC Sawgrass event with funding provided by the MJT and Official International Events Sponsor, Travel Underwriters. “I made five birdies in a row to get me going,” he said. “It feels great knowing that I played two solid rounds and it paid off.” Runner-up in this division with two solid rounds of 72-74 was Ben Brandreth, of Rockwood, ON, followed by Jack Quirke, 15, of Waterloo, ON, who closed with a stellar 69 to move into third place (79-69).

The MJT Boys 17-19 gold medal went to Paul Doig of Seaforth, ON, who fired 74-73 to edge out Colton Clemmer, 18, of Kitchener, ON (73-75) by one shot. Doig, 17, said, “I stayed in the present and putted well from short range.” Finishing third, one shot back of Clemmer, was Truman Tai, 18, of Markham, ON, (73-76).

13-year-old Tyler Nagano of Toronto, ON, dominated the MJT Boys 13 and Under division after firing rounds of 74-75 to win the gold medal. “It feels great to win my title!” said Nagano of his victory, adding, “My personal highlight for the weekend was making an ace on the 4th hole.” Michael Rizzo, 13, of Brandtford, ON, carded 79-78 for a solid second place finish while third place in the division went to Jordy Denomme, 13, of Waterloo, ON, (79-79).

Etobicoke’s Ana Peric, 16, had two solid rounds of 87-80 to win the Girls Division title over Sarah Geurten, 15, of London, ON (89-82). “I was nervous heading into the second round,” stated Peric. “I stayed calm and it helped me with the win today.” Finishing in a tie for third among the Girls was Olivia Brock, 17, of London, and Melissa Ramnauth, 14, of Caledon, ON, who both carded two day totals of 94-90=184.

The Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition in each division was won by Michael Rizzo, Brenden Henriques of Waterloo, Paul Doig and Olivia Brock, while the divisional Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions were won by Jordy Denomme, Michael Ramnauth of Caledon, Colton Clemmer and Sara Holland of Essex, ON. Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Wesley Grier of Toronto, Michael Ramnauth, Matthew Geurten of London and Ana Peric.
